Guys, How would you handle your girlfriend hysterically crying?

My ex did this all the time. She was incredibly emotional - not an issue. If it was because of something I did, or something she thought I did, I gave her space. Then, when she calmed down, I would pull her in for a hug.
If it was because of something unrelated to me (family issues, problems with friends, etc.) I would hold her hand, calm her down, and hug her.

I would cradle her, sit her down and just try to calm her down by petting her or running my hand through her hair. Just try to make her feel cut off from the rest of the world enough that she can feel as comfortable as possible and tell me or (more likely) hint at what she needs.

I want to find ways to remove the source of her anguish. To fix things, so that she stops crying.

I think it's a pretty standard way of reacting for guys.
