Can you be single forever and be happy?

Question

I recently turned 28 and I've been single since I was 24.
I'm happy with my life but of course I would love to meet someone one day but now I don't see it happening realistically.

I don't know what makes me so undesirable as I'm the only single person I know.

Do you think you can be single/alone your whole life?

yeah and I know many people who have been single for decades and are in their 50s now and they are so happy. Usually intelligent people are super picky and tend to be single.

They are happy with going on holidays alone, working on themselves, being able to be selfish, being able to think about themselves and make decisions without thinking how it will affect another person.

They don’t need any approval from anyone else to make a big decision. They can just decide to move to the Middle East to work for a couple of years at the drop of a hat without worrying about a spouse or children.

Sometimes I envy people who are alone and can do anything they want without approval. I don’t want to disappoint my boyfriend so I put off a lot of things because he is quite orthodox. Sometimes I wish I had the chance to experience single life because I have been committed since I was 15 and it feels like I have never had the chance to live and grow alone. My whole life has been around him.

Being in a serious and committed relationship will tie a person down somewhat so I think that being single has many of its own benefits. It all depends on priorities. I for one would never settle. If my boyfriend leaves me I would probably be single forever too and I would be happy. I don’t need a boyfriend or husband to be happy. I am with my boyfriend because he is my happiness.

Never start any relationship for the sake of having the relationship. Every relationship should be because you want it. Because it brings you happiness.

I'm very happy as I am. Of course we all have insecure moments.. am I unlovable? What does everyone else have that I don't?

What I've come to realise is that if I just wanted a partner - that would be easy and I could have that. That's not what I want and I won't sacrifice my freedoms and happiness for companionship. If I'm going going be with someone I want it to be with someone who enriches my life.

Will I be single forever - possibly; but I'm okay with that possibility.
It's not because I don't have anything to offer - but because I haven't found anyone offering what I need.

I am in your shoes. Single, near 30s.
I dunno, I am still unsure. I heard that in our age (someone told me) we start to coexist with being single, and being more and more unable to tolerate life with a partner.
Because we understand the motives of couples to be in couples psychologically. Because mostly this is the age where they have kids. The jealousy fades away, and it feels like we skipped a black hole. You know.

So yeah, I think you can be happy. The problem is I am a weak bitch, I mean not strong enough to live alone. So I have an emotional issue about it. So I can't.

But if you feel you are strong enough to trade the benefits of being in a couple, with those of staying single. Go for it.

Are we bad? Undesirable? Should we feel bad they didn't come easy for us. I think not. Ask yourself would you stay single if you were rich? Wouldn't a guy everyday ask you out? No thanks. The fact we are single doesn't mean we are disadvantaged.

I feel anxious enough just being with one person right now, because, you know, it's tougher to find women who want to be with a married man, possibly his wife as well, as you get older. More responsibilities, owning a house is nice, I love my family, but damn do I miss having the time to line up two women pretty much constantly.

So, no, I can't manage being single forever, I think the longest I've been single was really just me not wanting to be tied down for 2 or 3 years, playing the field like my life depended on it, and STILL hoping that through these one night stands, friends with benefits, that I'd find someone I could love again.

Falling in love is so addictive, I'd do it every week if I could.

I've been single my whole life and have reslly enjoyed it thus far. I've found the contentment and joy of singleness in life. Not everyone does well being single or in a committed relationship but I believe it's important to develop a healthy relationship of love with oneself regardless of whether they stay single or not.
Yes, being single can feel lonely at times but for me I feel like if I was with someone that picture I have of a happy relationship is just an illusion because of what I see the reality being for the the real people in my life and not behind a camera. I truly believe we create our own happiness and the best way to control that outcome is begin with ourselves.
There's absolutely nothing wrong, strange, or foolish about being single and being fine ir even happy with it, so keep doing what you feel is best for you and enjoy the time you have.

I feel everyone should go through a relationship drought for at least a few months, I think people are so afraid of being single. I get users at age 20 feeling like they’re born to be alone when you got 30 somethings been single and not tripping. Sometimes you meet the one in your 30s or 40s. I see it like this: you are single because you are supposed to be growing and making yourself a ether person. Some take less time then others. If you are comfortable being single you are relationship material to me. Because you are not all caught up in relationship craziness and are more stable emotionally.

I spent a few years between relationships. i concentrated on my job, and trained for marathons and did other things I could do by myself. After a while i got a little too comfortable with it. I could spend the whole weekend without saying a word.
I really didn't have any friends either. If I wanted to see a movie I went alone and if I was too lazy to cook I would go to a restaurant and sit at the bar and order dinner.
I don't even remember what snapped me out of it but I could see that yes you could be happy alone or maybe just not miserable.

I imagine your are working something out or working on your future I don't know. I'm sure you will be ready at some point and it might happen before or when you are ready. You are still quite young with a lot of things to do before you start talking about forever and the rest of your life

Yes, yes you can. Each has to follow their own path. None knows it best, especially while you're on it, than yourself.

If you're settling to be forever single, you might have some lonely times. This is not bad, but you have time and options to leave it.

Personally I find guys are better suited for staying out of partnered relationships, but there are also some women. Most have a purpsoe that keeps them going, so they are introverted. If you're extroverted, I wouldn't go it alone.

I think so. I made the decision to remain single and a virgin for the rest of my life at 18. I’m 24 now and I still feel happy. The majority of everyone I know are in relationships or will be in one eventually. I wouldn’t say you’re undesirable if you were in a relationship 4 years ago.

I've never had a relationship myself, so I don't know what I'm missing anyway.

Due to the above, however, I do think I'd have moments where I'd feel like I'm missing out on something, but I feel like if I found a relationship, I'd have moments where I'd miss being single.

I definitely can. But the reason why you feel like you cannot is because you don't love yourself enough. Many people find it hard to survive without romance because they lack self love, self assurance. They constantly need someone to tell them that they are valuable, worthy, and give validation. And frequently this arises from the lack of attention and love during childhood. You were never anyone's first priority in childhood so now you are constantly searching to be someone's first priority.

After the marriage I endured , combined with not being fond of people & peace being the most important thing to me now , means I am in that category. However , I am also a single dad , so stand no chance in the very male heavy " dating market " , even if I wanted to , all my own doing.

You don't sound unreasonable to me and half the world is still shut down so it's even harder to meet people. But if you are female and halfway decent looking you should have no problem attracting men.
