Why do I keep dreaming of a guy/crush I’m trying to get over?

I’ve noticed for these past couple of weeks that I keep dreaming of this guy that I no longer want to like. Maybe he comes up in my dreams since I really don’t have time to think about him during the day since I work a lot. He comes up in my dreams almost daily as a background character. Not as a romantic character per se. He comes up as like a best friend even though he’s not my best friend in real life. We used to be close and talk a lot but now we’re not.

This is embarrassing to admit, but I still think of a crush I had/have from high school. We were flirty with each other for a long time, but nothing ever came of it. She texted me a year after high school saying she had feelings for me. I distanced myself from her because I never thought too highly of myself and thought she was too good for me, even though she never acted too good for anyone.

No one really has a full grasp on dreams. But it seems obvious you like him and he is consuming much of your thought. Give it time, focus on your hobbies and passions. It will pass.
