It means you haven't taken the time to reach out to learn about and understand his expectations. Only he can clarify his expectations, for everyone's expectations are different. Say to him, "Talk to me about your expectations. I'm afraid I'm not aware of what all of them are. I realize that doing my best isn't helpful if I don't first understand your perspective. Please help me to see things through your eyes."

Don't pressure him. If he's not ready to talk, give him some space. Just let him know, when he's ready to share, you really are interested in understanding what is important to him in a relationship. Ideally, this is best discussed early in a relationship. If he isn't willing to discuss this, then he's already shut the door on the relationship.
