At least around here, it's partly true. I don't think the term "married" fits all cases, since there are people who live together without actually being married. Even so, when talking about domestic violence and even sexual crimes, this is the case in more than half of the recorded numbers, where the victim lives with the criminal or knows him.

For me, it's not definitive. There's still shade cast in the topic since the numbers that exist need to be denounced first, and several aren't. Also, there's been an effort, specially in politics, to blur the line that defines these crimes, so these numbers might not represent reality. To give an example from Brazil, there's been actual law proposals criminalizing "psychological violence", whatever the fuck that is.

True, married women are at lower risk than dating couples, but separated women are the most vulnerable. Here are some interesting statistics showing men are victims of DV more than most people realize.

- Overall, 22% of individuals assaulted by a partner at least once in their lifetime (23% for females and 19.3% for males)

- Higher victimization for male than female high school students

- Past year rates somewhat higher among men
