Did you know women commit domestic violence more than men do?

The common perception is that men are the ones who usually perpetrate domestic violence, but the facts show otherwise. Women are the violent ones more often than not, but female-on-male violence is rarely reported. The narrative is still about violence against women, and there is almost no attention given to violence against men, so the misperception is perpetuated. Should there be more emphasis on female intimate partner violence?

It’s not known that women commit IPV more than men. What is known is that most abusive relationships are mutually abusive. We also know that IPV is highest in lesbian relationships. Furthermore it’s understood that men are less likely to report than women and when men do report it’s less likely to result in official actions. Which is how documentation is generated, generally. All this suggests that it’s fair to ESTIMATE that women are more often violent in intimate partnerships. There’s also evidence that women get away with it against men more often. Bad behavior can’t be curbed without punishment.

We’re a very long way from treating male victims with the same care and respect we treat female victims, as a society. But we can individually be the change we want to see for now.

That's in keeping with what I've read. It's hardly surprising, though; you raise an entire sex with the idea that their action don't matter because "she's just a girl", you shouldn't be surprised when they act badly. And when you raise the other sex with "you should never hit a girl", well...

This doesn't just affect men, either; compare the rates of domestic violence in male versus female same-sex relationships.

The long-term solution is actually quite simple, and funnily enough, is the same for both genders: raise them to think of themselves as human. Teach your daughters that their actions shape the future just as much as those of their brothers, and your sons that they, in and of themselves, have just as much value as their sisters.

Given how many things you'll be struggling against, though, you'd better do like John Waters said and "better brace yoursel[f] for a whole lotta ugly comin’ at you from a never-ending parade of stupid.".

Women commit more micro aggressions then men but men commit more macro aggressions then women, but men are also 50% less likely to be aggressive in any way at all than women. Even if this data is not supported in all studies, we can teach each other to respect each other without going into narratives about who is better than the other or who is more problematic than the other.

I don't know if I trust that women initiate it more than men, but I do acknowledge that women do initiate it at times.

Unfortunately law enforcement doesn't usually take it that seriously nor do we as a society and that's not good. Men are expected to just suck it up and be tough. That isn't how we should deal with it at all.

Thanks, I agree society need to do better. But it has to start with achnowledging the facts and raising awareness. The fact you don't believe it is part of the problem. You're not alone in that. People have been so conditioned for so long to believe men are the perpetrators and women are the victims in IPV that it's very hard to change. I challenge you to do some research yourself and find the facts. You don't have to take my word for it. All the recent studies show the same thing and they are readilly available in the internet.

That's a real thing, actually. In terms of relationship "optics," stats on the stereotype of male aggression (which of course does exist) tends eclipse the fact that women can be guilty of this as well. (Earlier today was someone asking if it was ok his wife throws things... no, it's not ok for anyone to throw things.) Having endured this burden in my own life, I'd never think to express violence towards my SO that way. It's a terrible thing.
