We first met in 2007, and by the end of the year we were about to move in together. Her ex-stepmother was a professor at U of Michigan, and she flew us out and sent us back in a U-Haul with a bunch of furniture because she got a new job at a school in SoCal and was getting rid of stuff in anticipation of moving.

So she had us out to Ann Arbor and takes us on a tour of the Michigan campus. She goes “There’s a dance troupe that practices in the foyer of the student center!” or something like that, and takes us over there. As promised, a small group of college kids are practicing a dance routine to Hurricane Chris.

So there was this one kid who was apparently the lead choreographer, and he seemed very temperamental. We were only watching for like 30 seconds, but in that time, he halts everything like “STOP!!!”, then he angrily repeats and demonstrates what the desired moves were. So he’s like “How many times do we have to go over this? It goes ‘Ay Bay Bay [slides left], Ay Bay Bay [slides right]…” then he does this double shoulder shrug looking right on one shrug, and then looking left on the other, and he says “…. WHAT🤷‍♂️, WHAT🤷‍♂️“, and it was all we could do to not bust out laughing right there.

So now, almost 16 years later, we still have kind of a call-and-response thing we do, either verbally or via text, where I say “Ay bay bay” and she says “What. What.” Lmao.

I guess other songs I think of would just be ones she liked and played a lot. She loves Madonna, so a bunch of her songs. I remember she was pretty heavy into Katy Perry and Ke$ha like ten years ago. And on a sadder note, one of her closest childhood friends passed away, and they both loved “One Sweet Day” by Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey, which is kind of sadly fitting now. Oh, and she loved Tevin Campbell as a teenager, so most of his big hits remind of her too.

And, embarrassingly, I have something a refer to as “Tubby Songs.” My nickname for her is Tubby, lmao, and I pretty much just have always come up with parody versions of famous songs where I replace a key lyric with “Tubby” to make it about her. Nothing super complex, I mean, the easiest ones are just replacing “baby” with “Tubby”, like lately I’ve been singing Jackson Browne’s “Somebody’s Baby.”

I'm a guitarist and vocalist, mostly rock songs with a low vocal register. When my wife and I first met, the first song I played for her was Wonderful Tonight because it's a romantic song.
Where the lyrics say "She puts on her makeup and brushes her long blond hair" I improvised "red hair" because she's a redhead.
She was really impressed that I could sing and accompany myself and she appreciated the romantic intent. But later she told me that she wasn't crazy about the song because it ends with him getting drunk at a party and having to be put to bed. LOL
