My wife and I have never really fought in 14 years of marriage (along with some additional time being together before marriage) as one of us tends to cheer the other up if the other one is upset, so it's only in the rare situations when we're both upset at the same time that things get even slightly heated. We're also really into philosophies to cultivate inner peace and joy (Stoicism in my case, Buddhism in hers) so it takes a lot to upset either of us and so the odds of us both being upset at the exact same time are pretty low.
But one of the worst times I remember when things got heated between us both at the same time involved a case where she apparently told me about a week in advance that we had a friend's party. If she actually told me, I must have forgotten or didn't hear her saying it to me.
Then she came home on the night of the party expecting me to be dressed and ready for the party and I was in my boxers bumming around. So she said something like, "What you doing? Why aren't you dressed? The party is in 30 minutes!" Me: "Uhh... what party?"
So she was very upset that I wasn't ready while I was rushing to get ready and I was getting upset that she was upset because I don't even remember her telling me about the party. Then we were both getting cranky.
After that, I realized we were both getting upset so I asked her, "What's the big deal anyway if we're a bit late? They aren't waiting for us or anything." [This wasn't one of those parties where we had to attend for the party to start; it starts with or without us and we just join in].
She explained to me that in Japan, it's considered extremely rude even in parties where we don't need to show up on time to show up late. I didn't know that since even though I'm originally from Japan, I only spend my childhood and adult years here and missed my teenage years living in other countries. I was Americanized in that respect thinking it's no big deal to show up a bit fashionably late.
Then after explaining each other's viewpoints, I told her, "Don't worry! I'll tell everyone it's my fault for being late!" After that she really started cheering up and I made some jokes on top and she started laughing and we started hugging and then I had to be like, "Hey, we're running late! Let me finish getting ready!"
That was, by far, the worst argument we ever had although it wasn't too bad. After that, my wife started writing down these types of events on the calendar and reminding me days right before so that I don't forget.
Her drunk uncle was causing a lot of problems. She kept wanting to be nice when she accepted that wasn't going to work and let me handle it I punched him in the throat after he tried assaulting me and then dragged him into the middle of the road and told him if he set foot on our property again he wouldn't be leaving alive. He hasn't showed up since
I'm backing off if disagreement hits a specific level of heat. And then it's hard to get me back into the conversation... it's related to my autism and sensory overload, and for me, backing off is defending myself
we both needed to learn how to argue :D it took some time and a lot of learning about ourselves and our default reactions. But we achieved it, and we learned how properly should argue an introvert with an autistic person :D
Our ways of communication were vastly different, it could have never worked out.
He could not understand me no matter how much he tried and he did but he truly couldn't.
As for me, I was able to understand him, but I didn't like what I understood.
We solved it by breaking up before it got worse.
