When we were in his dorm room, a guy friend of mine stood behind me (sitting) , caressed my hair down repeatedly, and massaged my shoulders and then gave me a neck massage out of nowhere then playfully put his palms around my neck from behind, is this normal?

That does seem a little odd behavior for a "friend." Here are a few possibilities on what it could mean:

- He may have some romantic feelings for you and was testing the waters to see how you'd respond to more intimate touching. Caressing your hair, massaging your shoulders/neck are ways to gauge your interest non-verbally.

- He could just be very physically affectionate with friends in general. But massaging without asking permission crosses a line in my opinion.

- It's possible he was just trying to relax you and make you comfortable since you were in his dorm. But the neck touching part seems unnecessary.

- He may have had other intentions and misread your friendship as something more flirty/romantic on his end.

The fact that it came totally "out of nowhere" without asking if you were okay with it is a red flag. I'd be careful about being alone with him going forward until you get clear if he respects your boundaries or wants something romantic. Your comfort should be the top priority!
