Do you believe in the concept of “leftover women”?

I know in some cultures, unmarried women who are over their mid 20s are called “leftovers”. I can understand from a biological perspective, we woman do have a biological clock and the risks of carrying a healthy pregnancy to term increases as we get older but what do you think about this whole idea of “leftover women”?

I feel like people can find love at any age, yes the options do diminish as you grow older because most people have settled down but to still be in their late 20s and be considered leftovers is just wild to me.

For me personally, I guess. I mean, I personally would never have committed long term or married some woman who was 27-30'ish who had chosen career and premarital sex, expecting to get her husband close to age 30, already sleeping around with lots of men from her teens and early college years.

To me, she chose her path and she wasn't wife material and I wouldn't have settled down and legally chained myself to divorce courts and obligations so I could play second fiddle to her career and be the 10th men she's given herself to. If you are going to give it all to some college dude who smooth talks you at the club I'm not going to have kids with you and sign a lifetime marriage contract. If you give it away for free I'm not going to wife you.

Lots of guys marry or commit to these promiscuous, run through 30 year olds, simp for Onlyfans prostitutes, would date a stripper. Tons of men with zero standards out there so lots of men marry 30 year olds who are so set in their ways they cannot grow a life together with someone. Studies show divorce rates go through the roof when women have 4 sexual partners.

Women care about a guys financial future and his ability to provide. They don't really care that much about his sexual past. They expect men to have the same biological preferences. That is why women think their jobs/careers make them catches. Men do not care about that.

Now as far as being wives, older women can be "leftover", but that doesn't mean they don't offer good to society in their works, volunteerism, their friendships, their talents and gifts. It just means their role of being a wife and mom they may be leftover. They are no good for that role in society. They offer other things though.

I have mostly heard this in terms of China. Outwardly it is strange because there are more males than females. So it should unmarried males rather than unmarried females on that basis.

There are a lot of cultural constraints. A problem is bride price which is quite hefty. Another issue is women would like a man at the same level as her but men that are at her level quite possibly want younger more beautiful women and may not care about about a women being at his level.

That man has a much bigger pool than that woman has with the basic dynamic being a woman reduces the pool of men down to a subset that exclude her because they have different mate selection criteria.

It is not a matter of believing but instead of observing fact. As I am not Chinese I really can't observe and I can't verify if the claimed explanation is true.

For myself a broke waitress and a wealthy CEOess would be on the same level playing field of who would be the best wife and I would judge both on the same criteria.

Leftover women (aka wallflowers, spinsters, old maids, matrons, etc etc etc) have been a normative concept going back to ancient times… It initially started with the concept of optimal female fertility (16-30)… but with improvements in healthcare, extended longevity, etc., the age range increased (including 35-40) with the possibility of “geriatric pregnancies (40+), which has thrown the concept of “leftovers” off a little.

I honestly believe that every person can be attractive and appealing to others, but not everyone is meant to marry or have kids; they have another purpose and desire in life.

Its a stupid thing to say… not every woman desires babies… first of all, so not all of us are “maternal”. Second of all, some people don’t even want marriage for various reasons, even if a woman does want to get married, everything happens at the right time.
There are people who get married for the first time at 30 or 40 or even 50 years old. Love comes when it is the right time…
Lastly, a relationship, or marriage in my opinion, doesn’t need nor requires reproduction of children.

that's a term I have seen used for Chinese women who have reached a certain age, but I suspect the concept exists in virtually all cultures due to the decreased period of fertility that women in the older ranges of their childbearing years have.

It's really a matter of perspective, though- to me, a woman in her 30s, even her late 30s, is still young enough to try for kids and I wouldn't have a problem with her age. In my 20s, there is no way I would have seen it the same way. And different societies, with different social structures and values, will also have different perspectives on this.

Yes and no. I think most women would prefer to be in relationships (I think most GOOD men would to though). Now we can debate whether this is natural or is something feel as thier role imposed by societal norms. I'm not a woman so I can't say.

While I do think a woman CAN find a partner at any age. I've gone on record as saying many times that the BEST woman are married by 25. And the reason is simple. These women KNOW they want to be married. These women put EFFORT into finding the right partner. And these women want to do all the can to make that partnership a success. The women who marry after 25 I consider second tier. These women may want to be married but are a little more independent. But some are also just selfish. People don't like to face harsh reality, but the truth is there are some people that are considered leftovers. All the good girls that are attractive with great personalities are wifed up pretty early.

It's the same with me. Currently I'm a leftover man, because there's an aspect of me most women do not desire in a partner (financial stability). When I was in my teens I envisioned that I'd be happily married by around age 27 and with kids around my current age.

Don't get me wrong. Some girls are attractive and have good personalities and haven't been with many guys, but those girls are rare. In a way, yeah, but not the way you described it. To me, a leftover woman isn't a woman over 30. It's a woman, regardless of her age, who's had a lot of partners. I don't want to be with a girl who's been with 25 other guys, because to me that just means 25 failed relationships. Chances are I'd just be #26. No, that's a stupid and sexist term. Women should get married whenever they're ready or meet the right person, if they want to get married. They shouldn't feel pressured by society to marry by a certain age, if they do so just because of that they could end up making the biggest mistake of their lives.

Also, she doesn't have to have children if she doesn't want to or is not ready for them either (this has nothing to do with abortion but with getting married just to have children), again that's a life changing decision that should be thought of carefully for the good of both the parents and especially the baby.

I don't think it matters what we're considered by others. I think it's what we consider ourselves to be that matters. Even if I weren't off the market at a young age (22) I don't think I would view myself as leftover. Romantic relationships aren't the only thing that define us... There are just too many interesting and worthwhile things to be contributing to the world around us. For me, my greatest joy is in working with children and I think that would, and will always, make me "more than" because I follow my passion in life. My love for and relationship with my husband is an extension of that and I am grateful to have it, but it doesn't define who I am as a person and my value to the world at large.

That is true, and obviously if you want to have kids in the future it might be harder in your 30s but not impossible.

Times have changed. Society and the economy. Its very rare to be in your 20s and be financially and mentally mature to start and raise a family. My mother had me at 26, she was married had a house and a full time job. At the hospital they told her she was an "old mother", and I'm her first child.
