The words "kindred" and "spirit" date back to the 13th century. "Kindred" comes from the Old English word kinraden, which means "rule" or "condition". "Spirit" comes from the Old French phrase espirit, which means "soul, vigor, courage, and breath"

“Kindred spirits” is a colloquial phrase, meaning people with similar values, lifestyles, interests, and tastes, often parts of the same subculture (like hippies, punks, goths, etc.) It does not mean they have a spiritual connection as souls, but they can be Soulmates or Karmic partners if they have shared past life history. “Kindred spirits” make quick friends - but not necessarily get romantically involved, if they do become mates or long-term best friends - they might have some past lives together and be Soulmates. ‘Soulmate” is a metaphysical term meaning souls with many shared past lives in important roles, they can be romantic or platonic, they are often family members or best friends, not necessarily romantic partners or spouses.
