Of course it's common, it's logic that someone would make more of effort if they have someone to motivate them.
Same it's also common for the other way as been with someone can create lack of effort as it becomes normal. Or they try harder in effort before they get someone.

This applies to anyone don't matter who they are.

I'd say pretty common, if the guy doesn't have a clue about style but she does she can help him. His only concern about style is probably the attraction of who he cares about so he goes along with it. And now his general perception of style improves since she whispered him exactly what to do.

As a guy, we look a lot at women. We know what we like to see on them, what style we prefer; Small things like the type of glasses we prefer or the length of nails we're comfortable with.
We don't look at guys. We have no idea what's considered good or bad looking. All guys are just guys. So, we need someone to tell us what works and what doesn't. Hence, when we have a girlfriend to tell us, we can act on that.
