What's a widespread smartass teaching that is actually harmful?

I'm trying to learn, not solely preach this time. Share all you have. Maybe I'll stop doing something stupid that i am doing.

I thought of how widespread the idea is that rewarding favored actions creates a good habit. It may be true for zero effort activities. Like teaching kids to speak or something. But not for hard activities that require the same amount of effort no matter how many times you repeat. Some hard task that requires true discipline? You quit it as soon as you stop getting the rewards, or find an easier route for the reward. And worse, you'll start refusing to do it ever again in the future until the equal or greater reward is guaranteed. Maybe it's better to make the process itself seem more doable, than only intensify the perception of its difficulty by making it reward-worthy.

So get off your cuck chair, Doctor Brad, and share your experiences, maybe you learned the HARD way of what techniques not to use!
