If you truly consider yourself very close to her then you should give her the benefit of a conversation so that she can at least explain herself. I just think it’s quite unfair to ghost people without a word, and if you were in her shoes I’m sure you’d feel very blindsided and confused. On top of that, I couldn’t imagine cutting off an allegedly close friend based off a rumor I heard. I’d want to give them an opportunity to share their side rather than just fully taking someone else’s word and basing a big decision, such as terminating a friendship, off that alone. I get it — you don’t like confrontation, no one does, especially in the workplace. But to just distance yourself out of no where is just the chicken-out, avoidant route.
