GUYS: What does "my dear" mean to you?

This guy I work with did me a big favor. I sent him an SMS "You're the best, my dear!"...and he replied "?" and I was thinking whether it was my use of "my dear"?

I use the phrase with friends I know well who are girls. With people new to me, I'd never use it.

It's just a funny phrase to use on those days goofing around.

I wouldn't use the term "my dear" on my girlfriend because I'd seem like some 76 year old, married for 50 years pensioner.

Well, to me, "my dear" would be something a grandmother would say. Or he doesn't have you on his phone so he was like "who dafuq is you?". or he's senil and doesn't remember that he helped you =)

Name of affection, usually a good friend or SO, relative

Depends on how it's used, but mostly it's just a friendly saying. Occasionally my lady interest will say it in a flirty type of way, but otherwise it's jut a saying. She says it to other people, as do other people to me.
