Sorry to be a counterpoint. I worked at NASA and for NASA and retired last year. I worked in imagery as well as other not well known projects. Images I've worked with were not photoshopped. I am unaware if they photoshop prior to public release but everything I've seen is consistent with 95% of what we insiders see.

I see your flaw, you are using the word theory wrong. A scientific theory is a well proven explanation that have stand to multiple test. Gravity my friend is a theory and a law. We have observed celestial objects and we can calculate their motion with precision when we enter gravity into the equation. Another flaw is that you think you would have to observe something directly to know it exist. First of all I would like to mention that if you go by this reasoning you should also stop believing in a god because you can't directly observe him/her. Secondly a detective can come up with an explanation with the information at the crime scene. And if it doesn't require as much assumption as the other explanation, then it will be the explanation they use until new evidence suggest otherwise. That is the principle of falsifiability. If your explanation cannot be falsified, then we regard it as bad.
