Is a tin of golden syrup offensive to non Christians?

Golden syrup is a popular British sugar syrup. The tin bears a picture of the rotting carcass of a lion with a swarm of bees and the slogan "Out of the strong came forth sweetness". This is a reference to chapter 14 of the book of judges where Samson finds honey inside a lions corpse.

Much as I enjoy a trickle of syrup I don't appreciate having peoples religious beliefs shoved in my face over breakfast and I'm sure followers of other religions could be offended at this.

What are your thoughts on this? Harmless imagery or pushing religious extremism.

This isn’t honey at all. I’m offended that it is misleading. I want some honey from bad ass Africanized bees that will whoop a lion.

We don’t have it in the US which means it’s either really bad for you (I mean, the FDA even approves of hotdogs) or not yummy and that only Brits would like it since their cuisine is ummm... shall we say... basic.

The American corn syrup is banned in the uk. Golden syrup is the closest we have but its stronger tasting

I think this question is trolling.

First, you'd have to be fairly knowledgeable about christian mythology to even get that reference. It could have been an Aesops fable, or a story of Hercules for all most people would know. Non-christians wouldn't know the reference, most likely.

Second, I've rarely encountered a whiny more easily offended bunch of twits than American evangelical christians of the sort who see the mere existence of other religions as an attack on them. Like wishing someone happy holidays, because it's also Kwanzaa, Channukah, Solstice, Saturnalia and Christmas, and no I can't tell what denomination you are just by looking... ARGH IT'S A WAR ON Christmas!!!11!

You don't mind dogging, but get pissy at Republicans who screw you hard. You don't mind talking shit about anything, but get upset at others expressing any sort of opinion with tenuous religious links.

The story is related to the tag line, and the product doesn't have anything equivalent. If this was stuff being spoon fed in churches, then you could claim some sort of religious link. But it's just a story the marketing team there liked, and it's served them well.

Not every religious image or statement is trying to prosthelytize. I'm laughing imagining you getting upset at Jesus pictures and crosses you walk by or see on TV. thinking they are trying to seduce you to be Christian.

The imagery doesn't make it sound appealing. And I wouldn't have understood the reference to the Old Testament if you hadn't explained it. Fuck the Old Testament. I wouldn't buy that syrup.

If it's a good product then who gives a shit. There is a popular soap among backpackers here that has all kinds of weird messages on the bottle; no one develops their personal philosophy from reading product labels.

But if it's a British food product, it probably is awful.
