Christmas is a Christian holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. It is typically celebrated with both a special church service and a feast or family gathering.

Outside of its religious roots, Christmas is also celebrated as a day for gift-giving. In Christianity, this is symbolic of the three wise men who brought gifts to the newborn Jesus.

"Santa Claus," also referred to as Saint Nicholas, is one of the most famous symbols of the holiday. He is inspired by a few people, but most notably Saint Nicholas of Myra, who among many things is famous for his habit of secret gift-giving, particularly for children and the unmarried. In most works of art, he is shown wearing red robes with white trim with white hair and a large beard, and strongly resembles modernized renditions of Santa Claus, although he appears much thinner. His own day of celebration within Christian denominations falls on either December 5th, or the 19th depending on which denomination you're referring to. Despite being one of the most recognizable saints, there's relatively very little about him that is undisputed history, in part because he lived about 1700 years ago, but also because much of the relevant historical records have been plundered, damaged, moved, or rewritten between that time, and the recovery of his remains during the First Crusade, which are now kept in Italy.
