The verse is saying to not take rivals as allies. Which is exactly what the bible, Torah and common sense tells you as well.

You need to remember that language is a very real thing in the real world. The mishmash shit you speak in America is barely coherent and meaningful. It's why Americans struggle outside the American bubble and fuck up everything they touch.

The words "friends" isn't just what you think it is. There are many different interpretations on what can and cannot be considered one. Americans tend to refer to any acquaintance they just barely know as a "friend" and end up getting burned as a result.

What the Quran verse is referring to, in translation, is a protector and guarantor, who could flake on you if their religious beliefs or community were to change their views towards you. Which is much much more than the shitty English word "friend" could ever convey.

You need to remember that it's not enough to simply translate scriptures. There is usually a books worth of understanding and history in each verse.
