Well studies have been made where people in near death experiences when the heart has stopped beating, organs fail and the brain is turned off completly except one small part of TMI (i think its called TMI). It makes you fantasy just like when you are high. But the thing is everyone who has come back from that has said they see themselves from above which means it can't be imagination because imaginaition can't be limited to one expereince.

So I believe the soul leaves the body and after that I dont know what happens. Maybe heaven/hell. Maybe we enter another dimension, maybe we get reborn etc.

According to my religion, Islam, when people die, their souls go to another world called Barzakh, which has a lexical meaning of "obstacle, hindrance, barrier etc". Their souls continue to exist in this state until the Day of Resurrection when their body parts are recollected again and rise from death. During this stage, which also called the world of grave, different people have different experiences based on what they did in the physical world. Everything we do in this world, has a manifestation in the world of Barzakh, even the smallest things that we've done. It means at the moment we are literally determining how we live in Barzakh. If we do good deeds, they manifest into gardens and paradise. If we do bad things they manifest into fire and hell. Actually in Barzakh, we experience the manifestations of whatever we have done in the physical world. Its our own deeds.

The end. I suppose I can argue for a more religious view if we consider that the materia that made us go back to a non-living state and will eventually once again become life. Not that it will be us. It might be a tiny fraction of what was once a small toe or something.

But its just over. I think life is the anomaly of existence, not the other way around.

Well, the view that these experiences represent a glimpse of some kind of afterlife, is clearly the most rational explanation available, so yes, you're at least right about that.

The rational explanations are found in the physical and chemical reactions the process of dying has on the brain. Those reactions account for the reported experiences.
