What does it mean to be Godly?

Think of wading in a gentle creek or a fast-moving stream against the current. Or consider paddling a canoe in a small river with rapids or a raging river swollen by flood waters. Moving against the current is challenging. That’s what it’s like to live in an ungodly culture; you’re always moving against the stream. What does godly mean? That word in the New Testament means “reverence or piety,” like the familiar “fear of the Lord.” It’s safe to say that by those definitions there are few godly cultures today where most or all of the people honor and reverence God. Is it worth it to battle against the current of ungodliness? Paul wrote that “godliness is profitable for all things,” both now and in eternity (1 Timothy 4:8). And Hebrews 11:6 says that God is a “rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Living against the cultural current takes diligence and commitment, but the reward is worth the effort.

Are you being swept along by the cultural current today? Maybe you need to take a stand and commit to living a godly life.

When St. Tomas Aquinas made exceptions for virtuous pagans, didn't that open the floodgates to other exceptions? Such that if any exceptions are allowed does that not invalidate the original premise? Not trying to be difficult, as I have no quarrel with people who have religions that respect the rights of others.

Recent epiphanies have had me questioning the true meaning of Godliness in the most widely varied ways, leaving me with some solid answers, but also with other areas that now seem to be much more ambiguous to me.

Being Godly requires a rejection of worldly values.

And maybe you need to question why you find it desirable. If all you seek from it is reward, does it really qualify? If not, then why are you following a god who evokes "fear" as the most sought-after response?

His children have no need to fear Him. Only those who are on that slippery slope to being cast into the outer darkness do that.

There is a difference between the old and new Godly. It was easier to be Godly (faith wise) in the old ways than it is today due to technology and historical knowledge.

Yeah well Paul wasn't very godly and neither are most Christians. Hence it's a bit rich to try find in others what you yourself do not have,

But there is a way out. No one is perfect. We all sin, every day and every hour. If you accept the gift God gave you, then you have freedom. Jesus came to be a blood sacrifice for your sins. The next time He comes it will be with great power and to judgement. You can escape and be one of those coming with Him. All you have to do is accept this gift.

It means you submit and obey the Laws of the Universe. Lord is another word for Law.
