They are water ghoul type of monster who feed on seaman corpses. Subspecies of Mermaid is the Siren who lured seamen into water with hypnotic voices. Mermaids can hypnotize their victims and let them believe to be a pretty woman, in reality they are ugly monsters like all other ghouls which belong to group of cadaver eaters.

I don't believe in their existence, but I wouldn't rule it out either. There are so many creatures, especially in our oceans, that we're probably not even aware of because we know so little about them (especially in the trenches, like the Marianas).
