Born and baptized Catholic here. To put it simply, Catholics view suicide as a sin, an unforgivable one at that. That is one of the gravest and worst ones the religion considers one can do, punishable to either Hell or Purgatory depending on the life the individual lived.

When one commits suicide though, I have noticed it isn't used as an example of damnation or scorn of the victim that went through with the act. A lot of funerals treat it as a celebration of life as if they hadn't done what they did. At least the ones I have seen and been to. The consensus seems to be that it is a time of mourning and the one who died shouldn't be scorned or shamed, but celebrated and prayed for that they found peace. I am sure it is also more for the grieving family left behind too.

not sure. What I see more of in the Bible, Jesus, is "I am came to give you life, that you would have it more abundantely". So the focus to me was on the positive. Many Christians sufferred and persecutted and murdered, and to their end held firm to their beliefs and didn't kill themselves. the one that did, a follower of J of Nazareth, had been a traitor to him.

So I think the focus is on favoring life. I've as well seen many trying to save those whom are sad, depressed, lost... and some succeed. Suicide is just the mind giving up to the pain of processing something when the body keeps going. The solution being letting go and healing.

Not very well. It is seen as a sin. God is the one and the Only one who decides when you should die, or how you should die. It's viewed as killing. Murder.

But what if suicide IS how you should die? After all, you said God is the only one who gets to decide when and how you die.

Yes he's the only one who gets to decide. Taking a life is a sin, because you deny God in that regard. You made the choice to end that person's life. In that sense suicide is murder too, of one self. You don't play out the hand you've been given. You quit then and there. By choice. No matter how hopeless it all seems, it's a choice.

Ah but there's the issue. If God is the only one who decides it, I can't take the choice from him. I'd be acting out his will.

I would say it's the Devil at that point, hehe. As one atheist to another, I can say that I like you already. But I've been brought up as a Christian.
The way I see it is that you living your life is how God intended it to be. But we still have choices. Like Adam and Eve decided to eat from the forbidden fruit.

Who knows how long a person who committed suicide could have lived. What they could have accomplished, had they not given up on life.

So, now you're claiming the devil which is a lesser being than God, and me, a basic human, have a say in how and when I die? If so, you're rectly contradicting your initial statement.

If ONLY God determines when and how you die, as you claimed, then nobody else has the ability to dictate otherwise. It is solely God's discretion, not me, not the devil, only God. You can't have both points and be intellectually honest, hon.

The Devil thing was a joke.
When reading it, I always believed that you living your life and see it play out is that "God's plan". If you choose to end your life, you're the one deciding where it stops, when it could have gone on for years to come.

Just how society gets to decide what's right and what's wrong. Say I shot a person in the head. It would be a crime. We have a whole court system and that person was a racist. The justice system will see that rapist jailed. I decided to shoot him. It would still be a crime. I would still get jailed.

It's considered an unforgivable sin in my religion and denomination.

I am a believer in reincarnation. All that does is ensure you need to live the same life over again as you didn't figure it out this time around. If your life sucks, well, why would you want to go through that again? There maybe an exception when you are talking about self euthanasia, because you are at the end and just don't want to deal with the final pain... but I also believe in that you should bring harm to none, as that includes yourself very rarely is that option a no harm scenario.

The prohibition against suicide in Christianity is not found in the Bible. It’s something the early Church Fathers added in to stop people from killing themselves to get to Heaven faster.

I’m a Christian and a suicide is just as sad and tragic as any other death. Personally, it devastates me that that person couldn’t be helped and they thought that there was no hope. Death is permanent.

Suicide is a tragedy, usually coming from a state of hopelessness. It is certainly not unforgivable even though many churches presumptuously teach it as though it is.
