You're going to get a lot of "it's doves, not pigeons, lol" responses. Taxonomically, there isn't a difference: the family that pigeons and doves belong to contains numerous species, and whether a particular species is referred to as a "pigeon" or "dove" in English is mostly arbitrary. In fact, apparently, most other languages don't have a distinction.

When most people hear the word "pigeon", they're thinking of the rock dove, Columba liva. Or, more specifically, feral descendants of domesticated rock doves. Pigeons are common in urban cities world-wide, so people today associate them with dirty, grimy cityscapes, but people in the past found them attractive or useful enough to domesticate and breed, which is exactly how they became world-wide in the first place.

When most people hear "dove", they think of white doves, which, as far as I know, are just a white breed of domestic pigeons. People like them better because they're less common and their white color can be used to symbolize purity, but I'm pretty sure they would be despised as much as urban pigeons if they were as common as them. After all, seagulls are also mostly white, and not even ornithologists like them.
