I didn’t grow up with any religion or spiritual beliefs growing up, I’m interested now, is that okay?

I also live in a small town on an island, which I enjoy.
However I don’t want to be seen in the local church.. why am I feeling this way when I am seeking guidance from a higher power? It shouldn’t matter right?
I’m a good person with a strong will and generally care for others. But I’m very stuck and always have bad luck and struggle. In my mind I assume some religion or spiritual practice could provide some light or courage on my frustrations and provide me some hope and or direction.

That's very good news. Also pretty cool that you live on an island. So it's perfectly okay to know God without going to church, you really don't have to. Church attendance is not required for faith in God, and Hebrews says we don't need a teacher for we have the word already and the Holy Spirit to guide us.

The pressure to attend church is for the benefit of pastors. Imagine if you lived in a jungle in the middle of nowhere with no one else around for miles, or you lived in the mountains or desert, and you believed in God but had no church to go to, do you think God would be unhappy with you? No. He knows your heart is already with him, and you don't need church attendance to prove that.

There's a podcast called "The Bible in a year" by father Mike schmitz. You can find it on YouTube. It gives you a Bible lesson a day for an entire year encompassing the entire Bible. It's been very helpful for me. I recommend it.

If you're a beginner to Bible there's a lot you might miss just sitting down and reading it. Father Mike reads the scripture to you and then summarizes the lesson it's giving to give it clarity.

It' totally ok, I didn't grow up religious either, my father believed and we had some Catholic "fete" to celebrate and all but I never went to "catechism" or anything, I started to really believe when I was 10 years old.

It's always t ok to believe no matter your age.

Self assist suicide is a high cause of medical deaths in my country. People have ran out of hope and there’s no resources for them at their level of helplessness even when they ask for help. Spiritually or Religion seemed like a good alternative then a prescription for death that’s easier available than help.
