I'm in no way making light of the struggles of those that are living through Helene post storm damage, but I'd be curious to see their outlook on religion and prayer now after the storm, because I think a lot of people think prayer works when things are good, or medical science happens to cure someone, but if you really feel it works, I'd like to know what affect it has when the s--t has hit the fan.

As my dad has said many times, if we're at war, and our side goes to church every week and is praying to win and for protection of our families and their side is equally praying to win, going to church, and praying for protection, who does god favor?"

It can! Prayer, like most placebo effects, serves the purpose of comforting the praying individual. And by making a request in prayer, they’re going to be more mentally aware of opportunities that could lead them to what they want than they would have before because they now believe what they want will more easily come to them now that they’ve prayed for it. It’s fascinating, truly.

"Praying" is vague. You can work with living thoughts aka "thought forms" with techniques some view as prayers (which often do not involve words), or with actual spirits, and as others have mentioned "placebo effect" but placebo effects which they believe to be the sole reason why prayers work doesn't explain how I can accurately "remote view" into your room regardless of where in the world you are, whereas the obvious existence of the astral dimension which implies existence of your astral body & thought forms & spirits - makes room for "remote viewing" to make sense.

Prayer works if you believe in it and seriously believe in God. It has for me. Of course not all prayers have been answered but I've had other prayers work, in both the good times and the bad. And it also really does depend on how you're praying and what you're asking for.

As an atheist I'd have to say YES. The reason being is it's beneficial for people's mental health. Today we talk about looking after the body and mind but in more religious times they called it body and soul. Praying for many fills a similar role today. So whereas it won't help me I do think it helps believers cope with life's stresses and is that really a bad thing

Double blind trials have produced results which should be expected if it didn’t do anything.

The only effect it could have would be mental. One might believe so strongly that the act of praying might put their mind at ease. On the other hand, one may also believe strongly enough in it that they could substitute real action with prayer to their serious detriment.

It does work, I went through some bad situations and the only way I made it out safe was people and I myself was praying, I know God exists and he does take care of us and keep us safe as best he can.

It's always worked for me, it requires patience tho because it happens when it does and the time God says it's best, not when you want it and thats something many dont understand.

Religious books are just fairy tales, there is no god and afterlife, so praying does not work.

Sometimes it contributes to help a doctor or treatment succeed when the treatment alone failed for others.

Yes, even if it is only a placebo effect. Unless of course the person praying is an adherent of the Prosperity Charlatans (yes, I despise those who prey on the desperate).

It's not like God has to give you anything you want, but I can't say it's a waste of time.

It's not about the prayer. It's morality, being good and kind. Love is greater than anything. Sadness is like bad milk. The whole milk goes bad. Or for example. One bad apple spoils the rest.

Praying is just talking to/with God. If you believe you are talking to air, the only one who will respond is the air.

Yes. It has the same probability of success as not praying so if you want to get results but put less effort into it, don't pray!

You need some faith to do anything in life, whilst I don't need a religion for that, it helps to appease an issue apparent within all of humanity and the need for meaning also.

Only to bring comfort and nothing else. Two hands working do more than a thousand hands clasped in prayer.

What works is being polite and kind. And thanking life for what it has to offer you.

Yes. But not the way most people think. God hears and answers all prayers. But not on your timeline or they way you expect necessarily.
