After death, the body goes through a series of changes, including:
Relaxation
Muscles immediately relax, releasing strain on the bladder and bowel, causing most people to urinate and defecate.

Temperature drop
Body temperature gradually decreases by about 1.5°F per hour until it matches the surrounding air temperature.

Skin changes
Skin may sag and look purplish-red where blood pools.

Stiffening
The body stiffens, starting at the face and neck, then moving to the trunk, arms, legs, fingers, and toes. This is due to chemicals like lactic acid and calcium building up in the muscles.

Decomposition
The body begins to break down through a process called autolysis, or self-digestion. This process starts in the brain and liver, and eventually affects all tissues and organs.

Bloating
The body can become bloated due to the production of gases like putrescine, cadaverine, and sulfur-containing compounds.

Other things that happen after death include:
Pallor mortis, or paleness due to lack of blood flow, occurs after about 25 minutes.
Livor mortis, or blood vessel pooling, occurs about an hour or two after death.

Afterlife / reincarnation - remember how Covid lockdowns a few years ago the world wide showed how empty city streets could look and be? That's my ideal afterlife, virus free, however I mean how it's basically like "everyone almost everyone else disappeared yet the lights were still on, things looked like they ran on autopilot aka buses trains etc as if driverless etc" lol 😂😆

You go to one of 2 places. Heaven, or Hades to await Judgement Day. If you are going to Hades, then you had better wish there is nothing after death. But, just as in anything, wishful thinking gets you nowhere but in hot water. ~😟~

How exactly do "you" go to heaven or hades when your consciousness, memories, cognition, etc is all tied to a physical brain that can show signs of degradation even while you're alive

Your whole body turns to dust eventually. But God can resurrect your body from the grave. After all, He created all so nothing is beyond his power. It isn't your body that goes to Heaven or Hades, it is your spirit. You are reunited with your physical body on Judgement Day. If you go to Heaven you will have a temporary body until the New Heavens and the New Earth are created. Then you will have an Eternal Body that is perfect. If you were lame you will walk, if you were blind you will see -you will be perfect.

what I've Always heard is that you magically persist after you die somewhere, and for some reason your body is ressurected. sounds extremely egotistical, like you're so important you need to exist forever.

Egotistical? Do you know how much money is spent each year to look good and prolong one's life?
I'm sure some people would love to live forever. However, you can either live forever with God, or live forever without him in the "outer darkness". That is your only 2 choices. Which will you choose?

If damned your spirit goes to a holding place called hell awaiting the resurrection of your body to stand judgment before the Lord Jesus Christ and be cast into the lake of fire.

You go to Hades, which is a waitng place. Hell comes at The Great White Throne Judgement. If you recall the rich man and Lazarus, the rich man was in Hades and in torment. A precursor of things to come.
