But there are some exceptions,
1. If you are from a royal family and your marriage is a means of diplomacy to secure the future of your people.
2. Or a woman who is falsely accused and no one is marrying her and due to some reason she is not getting married and does not have a job.
3. If a woman lives alone and there is no man in her family, then you can marry a second time with the permission of your first wife.
4. When your wife is not able to give birth to a child due to some reason..
In today's time, by law, everyone except Muslims has the right to only one wife otherwise they will be jailed. A woman can have as many husbands as she wants without any jail.

Then Shri Krishna broke that rule. What happened was that a local demon king Narakasura kidnapped the women of villages and minor kings and forcibly kept them in his harem for raping them later. For this, he even killed their fathers, brothers, husbands and kids.
As soon as Krishna got free from the Kaurav-Pandavas war, he invaded his territory.
After winning the war, Krishna tried to send all the kidnapped women back to their birthplace but many came back and many did not go at all.
Because they were in the captivity of that demon king for more than 10 years, people were not treating them well.
So the girls again threatened Krishna to commit mass suicide. So Krishna again proposed to keep them in his palace and if even after that they did not find a place for themselves then he would accept them as his wife but only in name. So that their honour is not harmed.
The number of those girls was 16108. Now there is a controversy over this number whether this was true or not or this number is hinting at something else as its proof is not found in the scriptures according archaeological survey of india.

Traditionally, most religions allowed polygamy, which results in many children and increases the religion's population. That's also why many modern religions are against abortion and birth control... it takes away from the religion's population.

I think there are several, not just one.
Hinduism, Islam and several tribal religions allow the practice of polygamy.
Polygamy was an exception among Hindus, not the norm. Hindu is more like a culture, like Islamism and Christianism it is not fixated on one book.
and when the whole of Europe was living a tribal life, Hindu were already living in cities. It is a failure of your education system that has never taught you the truth.
