Why are the priests in the church always perverts?

Today I went to a Catholic church in London. There was an old priest there, about 80 years old. He asked me how old I was. Then he took my hand and asked me what kind of men I liked. I got angry and left right there. Are all priests like this?

The fact that Catholic priests are required to be abstinent may attract some odd balls to that calling because it's normal to have sexual urges and abnormal to suppress them. I have a feeling that many priests masturbate a lot. Others feel guilty over having sexual desires. But I think the majority of priests are dedicated to their spiritual calling, just as are ministers and clerics from other denominations and religions.

Lots of married protestant ministers have affairs. Especially those who have large congregations and are wealthy use their positions to take sexual advantage of their followers. And what about clerics from other religions?
So it's not just limited to Catholics.

In the end, though, I think only a small minority of Catholic priests are predatory perverts, just like only a minority of men in general are predatory perverts.

There are a lot of priests committed to doing good in the world. And there are evil pedo priests too. I think the official requirement for celibacy doesn't help. I also think there is a generation of priests that consider themselves entitled as moral authorities rather than social workers tending to the pastoral needs of their flock. My impression is that things are improving within the Church... clearly your 80 year old isn't part of that improvement. I am sorry you had to experience that.

There are bad actors in every religion. I think the Catholic church has more than other religious denominations because they do not get married and have no sexual release. Hopefully, like most Catholic beliefs, eventually change.
