Any psychologist will tell you that good valid evidence doesn't always convince people. People live in denial all the time about all different kinds of things every single day. What makes an atheist any different than those people?
As a theist I can point to the plethora of patterns and order in the universe as evidence for design. What reason other than denial do atheists have for being atheists. What could possibly contradict the truth of God's existence?
Even if god exist, I'm pretty sure an omnipotent being doesn't demands such a low level life forms like humans have to pray to him because it gratifies god's ego, neither I'm sure god doesn't categorize priests, believers and non believers in some weird hierarchy. That's why I'm atheist, I hate all those false charlatans who tell my what god's will is and of course their interpretation of god's will fits to their interest. All religions are parasitic organizations which exploit believe in god.
The only parasitic thing are people who are evil or who's allegiance is towards evil. There's nothing wrong with promoting a culture towards good instead of evil. If you don't think people are capable of evil then you're naive.
Good vs. evil isn't the reason people are atheist. People are tired of some individual who take the right for themselves to define what is right and what is wrong. My mind isn't a democratic parliament where the majority rules, in my head I'm the ruler and I determine what is good and what is bad, not some pedo enabler and supporter with priest collar.
What religion enables or supports pedos? Only someone who doesn't care what's right or wrong or someone who defines it for themselves could support that. You live in a mostly christian society with christian culture. If you lived in a society where people defined it for themselves you couldn't say what pedos did was wrong, and they would probably do more pedo shit.
Thank you for being honest though. Although in my opinion it's better to be a deist than an atheist, at least people would take you more serious.
As with any other sort of beliefs (political ones, attitudes about sexual orientation etc.) most of this stems from a person's background and childhood upbringing.. They either didn't grow up in a religious household and were raised with no religious affiliation, or have some sort of trauma related to religion (if it was forced on them, as children, or were cast aside by their family and broader community for not believing enough, so they developed an aversion towards it...
I personally find it arrogant to present your opinion as an objective fact, or categorical truth, without providing any evidence to substantiate your claim. in my opinion agnosticism is a much more humble and balanced belief system, as it acknowledges the limitations of human knowledge
Confirmation bias. Frankly speaking, a strong or maybe the strongest reason for someone to be an atheist could be their world view and the need of not having anything or anyone contradicting their desires and natural needs. Been there when I was one.
So basically they would believe things that they deem as "useful" as opposed to what's real?
Like for example, if somebody thinks that lying to themselves will help them achieve a certain objective and so they choose to believe that lie, they would be pursuing what's useful as opposed to what's true.

People have been trying to prove the existence of their invisible friends for thousands of years.
