My parents, my cousins, relatives, neighbours. Every one of them says that islam is great, but muslims are not.

If they were real muslims, we would be the:

Richest, most productive, most civilized, most developed when it comes to tech and science and philosophy.

If you’re going to talk about a country, at least bring statistics, history, or concrete examples. Saying things like "they’re all shitholes" or "everywhere they go gets ruined" isn’t analysis. If we’re talking about radical Islam, then you’re right those dogmatic, sharia-obsessed groups that question nothing do move with a herd mentality. But someone who’s a Muslim, believes in religion, or simply practices their faith doesn’t automatically become stupid. I’m Turkish, and in a secular system like the one Atatürk established, religion itself is not an obstacle to economic or scientific development. Believe me, a country doesn’t suddenly advance just because everyone becomes atheist. First ask yourself how much your state officials actually value education and science.

Good question. They are almost entirely all a shithole, you’re right. The Arab spring has morphed into stagnation. It’s of course, quite complicated. There are many external factors, and internal ones. I believe the main overwhelming problem, is the ongoing 1,400 year old sectarian divide, that perpetuates cycles of extreme violence—The cost is almost incalculable. There are no winners. Power structures based upon hatred and conflict.
Then there’s so many other problems, it’s hard to even quantify here. Authoritarian dictators, theocracies running governments, corruption, failing currencies, water scarcity, environmental collapse, climate change, overpopulation, brain drain, no experience with secularism, no history of civil service, youth unemployment, etc. etc. etc.

What does it change? I became an atheist when I was just 17 and now I am 34. So it didn't affect my life. When your parents are strict muslim, do you think you would born as an atheist?
