What is the sound of one hand clapping?

That question is actually one of the Zen sayings from a Zen meditation I do which is supposed to help me be all Zen and think about nothing. One might think I already wouldn't have any problems thinking about nothing but it's actually harder than one might think.

So, anyways , in my quest for enlightenment, I ask , if anybody else meditates, can you, please, tell me, What is the sound of one hand clapping?

Well, I have the privilege of actually being able to do this and it just sounds like a softer clap. Now I try not to clap too often lest I be confused as a seal at Sea World and frankly i wouldn't want to be clubbed by the wrong people if I were out in the wild. However, going around clapping with one hand in each side makes me feel more like a lobster which people eat and honestly, that isn't a better option.

The answer: the sound of one hand clapping is sea animals.

After contemplating this question, I found that I can make a clapping sound by clapping my fingers against my palm. Does that make me a Zen master?

This is actually a very sound question. Have you ever seen a classical concert? In between performances, while the director bows for the public, the musicians will clap using one hand against their thigh, while they hold their instrument (violin, trumpet, whatever they're playing) with the other hand.

As for clapping with one hand in the air, the sound would be imperceptible to us. It would displace enough air to set a flying butterfly off its course.

Reminds me of a long time ago. a rabbi offered a prize for whoever knew how to clap with one hand. A guy sitting next to me said "you would need 2 people." I said "i will help you". So we went together and clapped our hand and split the can of cola!
