What does the golden calf in the Bible really symbolize for us today?

I believe the golden calf in the bible, which the Jews worshiped while Moses was away with God, represent the worship of career and labour and money and status and intelligence and human effort and strength.

The bible says, that when you do not worship the law of God, you will worship the law of money and employment and career.

Money and employment and career are not bad, but when it replaces God or your respect for fellow human beings who are of low financial status or social position and economic empowerment, then the career becomes an idol, and not an asset or benefit in your life.

Just like money can be either your servant and your friend or your master and prison sentence

And food can either be your friend or your drug.

And hardship can be either your mentor and your purifier, or your corrupter and your hate builder.
