Could God hide people’s true strength to reveal who your real friends are?

In the bible, when Pharaoh thought Israel was powerless, he chose to fight them instead of showing them mercy, because it appeared as if Egypt was winning and Israel was losing, and then Israel surprises Egypt, by sending a huge flood from the ocean to come in and destroy Egypt in the bible.

It is just like when I let my guard down while attempting to pick up a dead insect in the home and it flies away when it sees me heading towards it and I realize it was only pretending to be dead, God might hide the true status of others from you to see how you will respond when you believe they are helpless and to make sure you accept and reject the people he wants you to reject or accept.
