I just recently learned about Elena Ferrante, an incredibly famous and arguably Italy’s most influential living author who has gone out of her way to keep her life completely private and how her publishing house kept that secret air-tight. In 2016, an investigative journalist attempted to name her but the woman denied it and people assumed that her Italian novelist husband was more likely the real Elena, and he also continues to deny it.

And then you have cases like Hasan Minhaj who was revealed to not only be grossly exaggerating his stories of racism and prejudice but also showed a pattern of doing so in the name of humiliating people. Their lives were exposed when people found out their real names and were able to confirm his politically comedic stories were all fabricated. Does being a public figure or associating with a public figure mean you no longer have a right to privacy as there will always be people who want to see the “real” you aside from what you put out into the world?
