Trump asks to delay sexual assault trial following historic indictment

Lawyers for former President Donald Trump asked a judge to delay the start of a sexual assault and defamation trial for one month to allow a “cooling off” period following the historic indictment charging Trump with falsifying business records.

Joe Tacopina, an attorney for Trump, asked the judge overseeing the battery and defamation lawsuit brought by former magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll to delay the trial until the end of May. The trial is scheduled to start on April 25.

Tacopina said the pool of potential jurors will have the criminal charges “top of mind” when they are called due to intense media coverage and that could taint the jury pool. Trump was charged with falsifying business records to cover up hush money payments made to Stormy Daniels to stop her from going public about a past affair days before the 2016 presidential election. Trump pleaded not guilty to the charges.

“To be sure, President Trump is a persistent subject of media coverage. But the present situation is unique because, as stated above, the recent coverage pertains to alleged sexual misconduct, the same issue at the heart of this litigation,” Tacopina said in his letter to Judge Lewis Kaplan.

Trump has denied the affair with Daniels. He has also denied sexually assaulting Carroll, who alleges Trump raped her in a New York department store dressing room in the mid-1990s. She first sued Trump for defamation in 2019 after he denied the rape, said “she’s not my type” and alleged she made the claim to boost sales of her book.

Donald Trump says the staff of the New York City courthouse at which he was arraigned last week were so moved by his presence or the event of his booking on criminal charges that they broke down into tears.

Trump, in his first interview since last Tuesday’s arraignment with Fox News and “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” called the courthouse staff “incredible” and further claimed they apologized to him.

“They were incredible. When I went to the courthouse which is also a prison in a sense, they signed me in and I’ll tell you people were crying,” Trump told Fox News. “People that work there. Professionally work there that have no problems putting in murderers and they see everybody. It’s a tough, tough place and they were crying. They were actually crying. They said I’m sorry.”

It was unclear what courthouse staff Trump was referring to. As part of the widespread media coverage of the arraignment, Trump could be seen being led out of a doorway of the courthouse into a hallway, heavily surrounded by uniformed law enforcement. Trump wore a sullen, serious look as the law enforcement officers escorting him maintained emotionless expressions.

Trump was charged with 34 felony counts related to an alleged hush money scheme to cover up extramarital affairs leading up the 2016 presidential election.

“The defendant, Donald J. Trump, falsified New York business records in order to conceal an illegal conspiracy to undermine the integrity of the 2016 presidential election and other violations of election laws,” Assistant District Attorney Christopher Conroy said.

Donald Trump is being prosecuted for giving Stormy Daniels $130,000 of his OWN MONEY to be quiet about their affair, which is a misdemeanor in New York State. Meanwhile, why isn't Chirlane McCray being prosecuted (or at least vigorously investigated) for losing or misappropriating or stealing over $850 million in TAXPAYER DOLLARS as New York City's "Mental Health Czar" under the former mayor, Bill DeBlasio? By some accounts, she might've even made as much as $1.2 billion taxpayer dollars magically disappear. So why isn't Alvin Simon Theodore Bragg actively investigating this egregious financial matter?

Also, it's not "whataboutism", because if McCray was indicted and prosecuted for every $130,000 of taxpayer dollars she made vanish, she'd be facing at least a 6,538½ count indictment. That's based on the total amount being $850 million. If the total amount is actually $1.2 billion, she'd be facing a 9,230¾ count indictment. Just based on the mathematics alone, it seems more important to figure out what happened to $850 million (or $1.2 billion) of taxpayer dollars than to figure out what happened to $130,000 of non-public money. Makes "cents", right?
