Popularly called a 'war', it was effectively a Mass Genocide of the Proletariate and Lumpenproletariate (poor young men, the biggest threat to the ruling elite), at the time that the Bolshevics, of the Proletariate in Russia, threated to revolt. They did just that in the Russian Revolution of 1917.
The tipping point is this: if these poor young men and boys were Volunteers, this wouldn't be a mass genocide. But understand 1 thing; THEY WERE FORCED.
They - it would have been Us - were CONSCRIPTED into the Army. Over Half DID NOT volunteer. And those who did wanted to get out once they saw and heard what was actually happening.

Forced to register. We were Forced onto the Trains, much as the death camp victims were forced onto the trains to Auschwitz, Belsen and so on, 20 years later.
We were forced onto the ships, and we were forced into The Killing Fields.
We were forced into, and out of, the Trenches on the Front Line, and we were forced 'over the top' into No Mans Land. If we refused, the officers shot us dead. Thats why they carried revolvers.

It is no coincidence that there were no military tactics used in The Western Front. Their only tactics were 'line them up opposite each other in mutual firing squads. Let the desease and weather kill them, drive them to suicide by going over the top to end it all, or force them over the top. Repeat for Four Years'.

So bad was the mass genocide that it created the 'Man Shortage'. Which transformed Western society.

Today, the exact same poor, usually young, Always Male, target demographic, have gained no ground. They are still the victims of modern and old society. Especially in the post-9/11 Manhunt. And conscription is as strong as ever in much of the world. It is why so many people die in wars.
