So, this might be a long explanation, I'll try to summarize it.
My first love and I dated when I was younger, and split up due to his inability to keep me as a priority, among other things, such as developing feelings for a woman who drove one of our best friends to attempt suicide, and choosing her over me. (She was highly manipulative). For several years after, we kept attempting to be friends, and we'd go periods of time without talking, as I stated, due to his inability to treat me the way I know I deserve. However, I keep coming back to him. We have a lot of history.
I talk to him a lot about some stuff going on in my life, but he never asks me about it. He never asks how I'm doing, and generally doesn't contribute to the conversation very much. I always am the one to reach out, etc.
So about 2 nights ago, he told me he'd been going through short periods of feeling a little bit down. He didn't cover much on the topic, and I told him it's fairly normal for people our age to feel like that, and asked what was causing it. He didn't really give me any answers, and I let it slide.
This morning, we were chatting and he was obviously in a bad mood. I asked what was wrong, and he went on this huge tantrum, saying that I should've asked him yesterday (when, ironically, I did.) And that I should've learned, and I quote, "from HIS mistakes on how to be a better friend". And when I told him he was being a hypocrite, given he never asks how I'm doing and its unfair for him to expect me to be a fantastic friend, he proceeded to ask if I can ever accept blame, anything to make him look bad, etc. We basically had a huge fight about this, with him dragging a ton of other things into it.

So, as the title states, is this friendship toxic? I give and give, but never seem to get, and it kinda drains me sometimes. I feel like if it wasn't for our almost decade of history, I wouldn't give him the time of day. If I cut him out of my life, again, though, I feel like I'd miss him.

I'm really confused about this guy's behavior and need some opinions.

One second his all about me and says things like "you're not like other girls, you're different" and does things like caresses my cheek or comes up to me while I'm studying and compliments my work ethic. Once he even kissed my head and said "I love you (my name)" in front of his friends and my friends while saying goodbye.

But then he also does things like ignores my existence for weeks as if he doesn't even know me anymore. And he is also the biggest flirt with other girls. He gets all cozy with them in class (who in the world does that). He even flirts with my closest friends.

And then he goes back to the same old being all about me way. He has been doing this for years it's a cycle that's messing with my emotions. Negatively.

A few weeks ago he posted this quote about meeting someone when your too young and messing it up due to wanting to live life and then later on realizing she was the one... so now I'm really just confused. Could he have been talking about me in this post? Does what I've mentioned somehow suggest he likes me even in the slightest way?

P. S: I know I have to ask him in order to find out but I'm holding off on that for a while I'm sort in the middle of assessments. But I'm just curious for now what do you guys think? Does he like me?

The guy I'm seeing is dealing with a loved one being diagnosed terminally, throwing him off in every way (previous post). Here's where things are now:

-I was the one who was initiating more convos since the news

-He asked me what I was doing the one night and when I answered with my non-important plans, he didn't follow up

-Turned out his friend had an extra concert ticket and he thought my response meant I was unavailable

-After giving him a (joking) hard time on the phone for missing out on the concert, I texted him after saying he should come over to make up for it

-No answer all night

-Next day I came across a relevant quote on IG, sent it to him and asked if we were ok

-He responded with paragraphs saying that this is why he tried to end things initially because he knows the state he's in is unfair to me, he doesn't have much he can give right now, but that yes in his mind we're good, he still cares about, enjoys, and appreciates me, he just hasn't reached any clarity in terms of what he wants in a relationship

-I apologized for possibly being too much in my attempts to be there for him, told him he knows where I stand but I'm going to be giving him more space

-He answered hours later saying "Don't worry about giving me too much or too little space, try not to worry about me at all, I'm doing what I'm doing and I don't want to have to feel apologetic about it. Right now my focus is me, it's selfish but it has to be. Work is demanding, my goals are close at hand, and I don't want my life to feel complicated"

-To which I simply replied "Aye aye captain" because that, to me, screamed that he needed space

-He continued with the convo as usual, asking how my day was

Since then he's been the one to initiate more convos again, seems more present, and after sending me a song in the morning, joking around as usual, then not talking for half the day yesterday, I get a goodnight text before bed. Could my attempt to give him space really be prompting this?
