a lot of reactionaries say it's patronizing to black people for the left to say black people can't become as prosperous as white people on their own. Well it's not that we don't think that black people can't "pull themselves up by their own bootstraps", it's that we realize that the government gave out a lot more bootstraps to pull themselves up by to white people (i. e. homestead and federal housing act) than black people. So for white people to say that black people should lift themselves up by their own bootstraps like they did is just pretentiousness.
