I learned about this from a relative long time ago. I also believe that George RR Martin was inspired or took the idea and used it in Game of Thrones when Daenerys went into the fire with her dead husband.

According to the laws of Manu near the year 200 CE a Hindu widow was to remain pure or sati. Over time the word sati was used as a ritual for a Hindu widow to sacrifice herself over her husband's pyre.

Sati was not a major occuring practice but it is used today as a way to stereotype parts of indian cuture and to stereotype hindu women as opressed.
