Block and run. What's your opinion on cowards?

Question

I'm sure some of you guys had your fair share of cowardly people, who can't handle debates.

You know the types: they disagree with whatever you're saying, so they write something shitty/insulting in response and immediately block you to have the last word.

There's even a better kind, they send you an insulting personal message, then block you.

You all know who you are, my spineless friends.

I stopped deleting messages from my inbox, so I have a nice collection of "fuck you"s and "ugly bitch"es followed by silence.
Some of them have deleted their accounts since then.

But yeah, what do you think of people who block and run? Why do people bother joining discussions, if they can't handle opposing opinions?

I am in full agreement with you Masked. Frankly, you outlined it flawlessly so there really isn't anything I need to add other than:

a) I cannot stand it when a person represents a situation as either fact or pretends as if they have inside information on the issue only to be exposed, say something outlandishly silly (thus further showing them to be a fraud) and, as you said, block and run. Although I prefer calling it "block and hide".

b) The amount of people attempting to fraud others on this site is overwhelming in specific subject matter.

c) Outside of (about/around) 20 people (approx) the amount of intelligence or lack thereof is staggering.

d) Having an opinion is absolutely a good thing and that is fine. However, to represent something as fact or to attempt to dictate a younger person's mind by inserting their own poison due to their own misery are (outside of military posers & fraudulent medical "experts) the scenarios I never ignore if I spot them. I am sure we all have our own subject matter in this regard that we confront but, for me, those are the ones I always confront when spotted.

You and I are and have always been of the same mind on many things, Mask, so I don't really need to say anything else. We may disagree with small issue (s) (although this has never taken place and is simply an example) but, overall, we both respect intellectual and candid debate if the need arises. That said, I can see why this would be frustrating to you. Especially as a woman as I am sure you often get a specific group of worms that put your sex in front of the issue. Keep up the good work my friend.

Happened with me too plenty of times since I joined the site.
As far as I know, you're one of the users who gives straight to the point advise and I really admire that but some people can't handle that.

Let me tell you about what happened with me few days ago.

A female user posted a non sensical opinion on an Admin's question and I tried to defend from admin's side that,"It's unnecessary to post a comment like that"

She immediately retaliated and called me names and also posted some stereotypical comments like "I don't need to please you ugly Indian" and stuff.

Don't know why people can't take healthy debates?
My conclusion is either they're short tempered or just plain idiots.

i've encountered a few people on Facebook like that... they were friends of friends and very closeminded
it's frustrating because it takes me a couple hours to write a thoughtful position in an argument (i tend to write in paragraphs, lol) ... and by the time I click 'enter', i'm blocked... or they deleted the post (so no one can comment)

It irritates me because, usually i can tolerate beliefs that vary from my own.. but some people are SOO misguided that I feel compelled to give them 10 reasons why they're wrong
... and i don't mean some stupid pro-life v pro-choice thing that never has an end... but rather well devised and supported positions that are rooted in prejudice or obvious fallacies--the type of thing that just begs for a rationale response... and that never receives one because of the block! grrr!
(picture a troll comment... that's being rooted for by 10-100 like-minded morons (which is in some cases the majority--talk about mob mentality, lol)

I'm not sure it's cowardice so much as it is disdain... they may have no intention of arguing their position, because they're absolutely certain of its veracity, and just have such a low opinion of dissenters (or a high confidence of their own perspective), that any disagreement is an insult to them

I've been blocked for no reason before but I know it's because some people can't handle the opinions I give out. And yep, I've gotten nasty personal messages from people before. The best one was a couple of years ago from a very regular member (not sure if they're active anymore), but they said that I'm a communist because I'm Canadian - that all Canadians are "commies" and he blocks all of us because he doesn't want his mind to be warped. LOLOLOL! That was such a gem. I saved that one for a long time.

I block and run because I know how infuriating it is to the other person. And that gives me an immense amount of pleasure :)

I used to not block -anyone-. But then I got sick of the block-and-run technique being employed on myself so I thought I'd try it out. It's really quite fantastic.

I have ranted about it already, but my post was remove due to violation of the rules because I mentioned profile names - fine, I won't mention names then.

But yes, I find that rude, insulting and spineless.

Ignoring my answers are fine, blocking me is fine, but posting a message and then block you right after to deny me the possibility to respond, is totally unacceptable behaviour.

Either you have a free debate or you don't, user imposed censorship is not acceptable behaviour.

I've never in my life had anyone write me messages like that, and I'm something of a 'veteran' when it comes to online discussion. If you have managed to amass a "nice collection" of them already, and I mean this in the nicest way, maybe you should consider at some point that maybe the problem is 'not just them'? I mean, one or two, I could understand, but "a nice collection"?

The messages in my inbox seem to be people thanking me because they found something I said useful. (And it's not because I tell people what they want to hear - I'm always honest.)

Aw, man. Everyone else gets to have all the fun! I've never encountered this insult-and-run behaviour before, but I'm sort of jealous.

But, yeah, I do see cowards who state their positions, usually surrounding topics like theism, LGBT issues or racism, then run off screaming 'It's ma opinyun coz it's ma opinyuin!' or 'It is what it is! No Atheist scum gone convince meh.'. Like, yeah, OK. You hold such strong convictions, but your reasons and counter-arguments are so weak you know you could never lock horns with an intellectual heavyweight and win.
It just stinks of intellectual dishonesty. If you are aware you can't defend your position - you must also have doubts about it's legitimacy.

I usually let people get their last word and let them block me after they send a message to me. They get a kick out of it and I do too. When I go anon and someone dislikes my answer and they say I am anon to be a coward etc I ask them to block me and go un anon for a few minutes :)
The simple pleasures in life. Sometimes I see such a horrible answer from someone or a cruel answer and I will comment "block me please"

I feel like it has a lot to do with pride. They want to feel as if they're winning the argument and some people believe by getting the last word, success is guaranteed. Personally I don't think you should really care too much. I doubt you do anyway, but those people can also be trying to troll you just to leave a bad taste in your mouth as their own form of entertainment.

I've had plenty of insults messaged to me but I usually don't entertain the idea. It's not like i'm going to run into them out on the street.. but if i did >:)

I think that it's a common enough occurrence on this site to where other people seeing those comments know what happened- the person bitched out and felt that an e-victory was the most important thing for their pride at that moment. It's irritating when it happens, because you're like "Really dude? You're going to be a turbo dick about things like this?".

But I don't spend much time at all getting irritated over it. If the person is that sensitive, then life probably sucks for them anyway (if they even leave their house).

I personally only block creeps who send me creepy private messages and won't take a polite 'No'. This place is about debate and opinions, it's the whole idea of the site, so I don't understand why you would bother blocking people unless you are being harassed by an idiot. I think it's very counter-productive.

i think people who have the last word in a discussion or argument aren't the real winners. think about it if you are really mad at someone and they say "fuck you" but you dont reply, you dont give them the satisfaction of lowering yourself to their level.

I've only had that happen once it was some question a guy asked about his gf and some chick commented saying all American girls are sluts and I said something to the affect of what did being American have to do anything as there are those kinds of girls in all cultures. She then proceeded to send a message saying that I was a bitch I told her thanks haha then reported her and blocked her. Im assuming they banned or she deleted because she's no longer on block list

If someone says something insulting let me know... as a moderator I can hide the opinion or comment until a supermod looks at it and decides whether to remove or not.
It's important that it gets reported because that way, the admin team can also take action against that type of user. First warnings, than more.
I'm not talking about jokes of course, really insulting things that harm people :-)

Yeah some girl did that to me recently, but that's her business. She posted a stupid and controversial opinion and didn't like it when she got told her opinion was pig ignorant.

If people like that can't handle getting their opinions challenged then maybe they shouldn't air their opinions in the first place.

I've actually found my first blocker on here like 2 weeks ago lol. I don't even know why I got blocked, I wish she told me first why though. I like honesty. I admit I blocked once a user here but he probably realized the reason. But since then I've been pretty honest. There was also a time when someone would downvote me no matter what lol. I agree with what you said. Eh, like I am gonna crawl up in a hole and die just because of these.

They probably have a superiority complex and unable to hadle that concept that maybe someone has a differing opinion. It's never happened to me personally but I think it's funny. I like pushing people's button's so if I got those kind of responses I'd just laugh it off.

I think they are a little boy-bitch who can't handle the potential blow-back they might have coming to them.
