When my friends call me ugly, do they mean it?

I have a group of friends (only girls), and we're close, and sometimes one of them says a joke about the other, and we all laugh at it, but they're times when they get really mean (I feel it that way) and I don't think it's funny...
Sometimes, they like, make fun of my looks, and it really really hurts.. I know i shouldn't take it so personal, but it really hurts when they say something about how I look in a funny way, or when they give the impression that looking at me is like, disgusting
I have a really low self esteem, and sometimes like, I try to get over how I look, but then, one of them makes a comment and I keep thinking how ugly I am and how disgusting I might look

Since you have low self esteem and it's hurting you then their not your true friends, I personally don't hang around people like that but in general it depends on their tone like if their was a group of friends and one person was to make a weird face to be funny and the other person calls them ugly JOKINGLY then it's just for fun. But to me it seems like they are just picking on you, your not doing anything to be humorous, I wouldn't even laugh it off. If one of my friends were to call me ugly just cause then I would give them a straight face, they need to understand that it hurts you.(srry for long opinon)

I had a friend like that. She made it seem like she was joking but she obviously was serious. And she thought since I laughed too it wasn't hurting me. But it really was. You don't need friends like that. Friends are supposed to build your confidence, not crash you down. Even if they do it as a "joke", it's not right. If they were really your close friends they would be nicer than that.

Im sure you aren't really ugly you're probably beautiful even and they might say things like that because they have a low self esteem. Or they just aren't good friends. They could even be trying to make it seem like a joke but really mean it. But I see a lot of girls do things like that all the time it seems harsh and I never understood why some girls are like that

To me it sounds like these girls are doing more than "playful joking around".

They are putting you down emotionally, to uplift themselves. I wouldn't hang out with these bitches anymore.
