Way too little information to go on here. But a guy might generally ask that, or try to figure out your dating life somehow, if he were interested in dating you himself.

It really depends. It can be one of two or both( making small talk and out of interest). But, you know him and his personality more than we do. I would think that he is interested because guys don't typically ask about a girl's relation status :)
