Why do Texans think their state is better than the U. S?

Meaning they think of themselves as Texans before Americans and if pushed too far would leave the union? They fly their flag at the same height as the U. S. flag.

And the damn state keeps going against federal mandate. They go against the fed in almost everything sometimes for little to no reason other than just to do it. I think it is time the fed punishes them like they punished Louisiana for their drinking age by defunding their freeways. Wtf Texas?

In response to Art Dent question (since he blocked and ran)- Actually the jobs going into the state pay an average starting of $80k but it's native population is too uneducated to fill them hence the people moving there. They have incredibly horrible public schools unless you live in a wealthy area.

Hence the question why do they think they are so great? 😕

I believe every American are big supporters of their states, with some people going as far as loving their state more than their country. If people weren't big supporters of their state than the Civil War wouldn't have happened or at least it wouldn't have been as big of a deal as it was. Texans just happen to be the most vocal group of people when it comes to state pride (along with Californians and New Yawkers). I believe it's a combination of a variety of things such as their history, unique culture, size, diversity, population, economy, attractions, large GDP (It rivals Canada and is larger than Australia and South Korea) and etc.

However the biggest reason in my opinion has to do with the fact that they won their own Independence from Mexico. Texas beating Mexico was a David vs Goliath sort of war and then they went on to govern their own state, which allowed for that Texan culture and pride to fester. This is different from the other states in which they didn't form their own state identity until after they merged with the Union.

But anyway, every American has state pride. Hell even people from those "fly-overs states" have extreme pride in their state.

Countries/regions/states which have fought for (and, generally, won) independence from a dominating power tend to have a very strong self-image. Think Norway, Denmark, the USA, Kosovo. . . and Texas, which formed its identity to some extent in opposition to Mexican control. It gets more complicated when independence was fought for but not won, for example in the case of the American South, where the self-image is still deeply conflicted.

Of course we have issues. Who can actually say they have everything perfected? Being born and raised in Texas, I can say come visit us for a while to see why we think Texas is great.

People who spend time here always say the same stuff, that people here are friendlier than most places.

For as to why we resist federal mandate is because of another thing we're known for, we're no nonsense. Most mandates are covering things we don't worry about, they are often irrelevant to us because we are harsher on people who do stupid crap than most anyone else.

About the flag, that's just because we don't bow to other powers, we'll help, we'll die for the US if we need to, but we won't bow. So ya know there's no actual law against flying a flag at whatever hieght ya want.

As a state, we rejected splitting into 4 or 5 smaller states, we are self sufficient, we have the same GDP as Canada which would put us as the 12th highest GDP in the world if we were our own country.

That was the long story, the short story is that we're just too loyal too each other, and too bullheaded to change. We still love y'all though. XD

There's this thing called "Texas Exceptionalism" that stems in part from the fact that Texas is the only state that was once an independent country. The Republic of Texas didn't last very long, but it was independent nonetheless. I think most of Texas' bluster is for the most part harmless. It's pretty unlikely that they'll ever attempt to secede from the union.

Has the testicular fortitude to stand-up against an overreaching federal government. The Fed's are not always right and they are never looking out for any states best interest, they are looking at what benefits them and the ridiculous control they can have over every aspect of your being. Texas on the other hand prefers more of a 'laissez-faire' approach.

Because of it's booming economy, more people are moving there than any other state, mainly because the abundance of actual jobs and a growing middle-class population.

Low taxes also low property and home prices.

Some of the lowest crime rates.

Texas can also very easily survive on it's own with it's plentiful resources and land.

Texas is the future.

Please laissez-fairy the year isn't 1900. And Texas is anything but laissez-faire they are very heavy handed interfering in citizens private lives. Gay rights, abortion, creationism, matters that have nothing to do with them or state rights.

You're simply providing more anecdotes as examples for how the state of Texas thinks it's Constitution trumps that of the United States. The problem with this is Texas isn't its own country and interstate commerce of goods and people. Most Texans aren't even from Texas in the cities yet must be subject to its draconian laws.

Rick Perry went around the country recruiting companies to move to Texas mainly from California. The population of Texas is rapidly growing an unemployment is below the national average at less than 5%. You can pull whatever statistics you want to try and bend it another way that is what statistics do and statistics do and can lie to fit a cause it's called confirmation bias.

Texas's economy is booming despite the dip in oil prices and that industry grinding to a halt. But it is still stronger than any other state in terms of growth of industry.

If they weren't it wouldn't be so annoying.

Texas only fights back on completely conservative and or prejudice ideology. They are against welfare programs but want to do away with planned parenthood which is some women's only access to BC this creating more children on govt programs They refused funding for health care and thus 1 in 5 Texans are still without healthcare. They are making the biggest stink about Syrian refugees and thus it will most likely go infront of the Supreme Court. Texas is constantly bein ruled upon by the Supreme Court over one thing or another and they often still refuse to comply. Gay rights will have Texas infront of the Supreme Court as well. They just basically refuse to go along with anything that comes down from the federal Govt. It is obnoxious and unfair to its citizens who some of them desperately needs access to these civil rights assured to citizens of the other 49 states.

To be poor in Texas is from the sound of it worse than being a prisoner in Texas.

You know in science there is something called falsifiability. The point of it is that the argument of "all swans are white" is pointless, because everyone will agree and you will mostly see that all swans are in fact white.
In order to disprove it though you need to not prove that all swans are white, but you need to search for a non-white swan aka trying to disprove yourself.

Same goes to political discourses. It is of utter importance that someone is stepping out of line and asks uncomfortable questions in order to challenge the general consensus which often is a consensus without thinking deeply about it.

It really doesn't matter if they are wrong or right, but it matters that any discussion is properly held from as many different angles as possible and not make for example a no-thinking ruling of gay marriage without having thought this through (because there are a lot of flaws with the way they did it).

No that isn't what falsifiability is. Falsifiability has to do with the scientific method. You can't prove there is no Santa or that there is no god. Something can never be proved as true per the scientific method but in order for it to qualify for the scientific method it must be possible to disprove the hypothesis.

You can disprove the hypothesis that all swans are white by finding a black swan. Either way this has absolutely nothing to do with jurisprudence.

Actually it has all to do in the context I explained it which is to have a counter-part, to have someone quesitoning everything even if its just for the sake of doing so. Any political discourse absolutely needs a counterpart to have a proper argument. No I'm saying the judicial branch decides it not you. Every Supreme Court justice has their own judicial doctrine and interpretation of the Constitution.

I really don't agree with Chief Justice Roberts interpretation of the constitution on a lot of things. I think his ruling in the Affordable Care Act being within federal right to tax as opposed to being under the commerce clause was a dangerous precedent to set and that he was laying the ground work for other things to come.

But the Suoreme Court isn't ine person off their rocker handing down decisions. It is nine highly seasoned scholars of constitutional law. It is rare for there to be an 8 to 1 ruling. If the case was that straight forward it would have never worked its way up to the Supreme Court in the first place. Most rulings are closer to 5 to 4.

Rulings do occasionally get overturned but not often.

This attitude that some Americans have, usually ones with no further exposure to the Constitution than reading the Bill of Rights, that they can be the line 'decider' on what is and isn't constitutional is delusional and disturbing. They have absolutely no idea how the judicial process works and why and what is and isn't actually guaranteed to a citizen by the constitution because it changes based on court precedent not just by some words on a page over 200 years old. No one case stands alone. The justices draw on precedents when writing out their ruling.

This is what Trump voters don't understand. The executive branch doesn't get to just fly around like a loose handle... Other than Cheney. Most of his rhetoric isn't legally viable. He throws out vague slogans that sound good with no formal plan on how to implement them. He doesn't even know what the nuclear triad is.

I've been to just about every part of the state which is the size of France. Houston is an international city with smart people given there are accents and engineers in oil and gas and with NASA.

San Antonio is the heart of Tex-mex.

Austin isn't Texas but Dallas is. You do see cowboy boots and hats sometimes in Dallas or the rural area but it is rare.

El Paso might as well be Mexico. I'm a pale red headed lady but people there default to speaking to me in Spanish on the street assuming I'll understand. They then spoke perfect English to me once I said in Spanish I don't speak it. The only other place that has ever happened to me was Buenos Aires.

Most people in Texas urban areas are firstborn second generation Texans they aren't down with the rodeo and boots.

But even they love the state and adopt this bad attitude the natives portray.
