What's wrong with being an attention whore?

Question

Like for example if I post that I'm sad or something, people come out of the woodworks to call me out and call me an "attention whore" like it's an insult or something. They don't talk to me otherwise, but when I do something that rustles their jimmies they're quick to say something. 

What's wrong with being an attention whore anyway? Don't we as humans thrive on attention? I never understood that.

There's nothing "wrong" with it, just as there isn't anything "wrong" with someone voicing an opinion that is factually incorrect. There is nothing inherently wrong with one voicing an opinion on something, but it doesn't mean that opinion won't be challenged or disagreed upon for being wrong in its assertions. A lot of girls who attention whore do so because they feel like they don't get enough attention... but oftentimes, they do get quite a bit of attention.. but its never enough. And so instead of dealing with it in a more productive way, they try to suck the attention of people who probably have better things to do. I mean, imagine if the everyone in the whole world was an attention whore. How little would we get done if everyone was focused on getting as much attention as possible? Sir Isaac Newton was a very solitary guy who didn't get a whole lot of attention. I believe he even died a virgin based on what some studies of him show. But he was one of the most intelligent scientists ever to exist, and he largely achieved that because he wasn't concerned with frivolous things like how many people paid attention to him.

So in a nutshell, it just isn't healthy to be an attention whore. It's like the fat shaming movement. People don't like being told that they have to change, so they create a movement around themselves (with left cover) which prevents people from criticizing a bad habit that does have a wider effect on society as a whole. I see this issue of attention whoring as no different

what's wrong with being an attention whore? because it shows an issue in your emotional development. that you need attention to somehow re-affirm yourself. would we say it's ok when a child throws a temper tantrum? that's also a cry for attention. no it's not a good way to get attention and we as humans should crave the attention of others to the point that we do things solely to get attention

if you want to be an "attention whore" then that's fine. but understand how people see it and why they see it that way. A

and no we as humans don't "thrive" on attention. we thrive on food, water, relationships, happiness, contentment, etc

Ur right that wanting attention is completely normal and a part of life but attention whore sounds like an excess and usually excessive doesn't work out so well in the real world. mainyl cause everyone including u are absorbed in their own problems. there is only so much of their brain they can give to another person before anothers problems brings them down to feeling sad or frustrated. ur closest friends and family will have a much higher tolerance and will help u more. i think its best to divide the attention u want from different people who care about u so it doesn't overwhelm them (except in serious situations where u badly need help... then, dont hesitstate!) and to work hard to keep urself strong. can u handle other ppls regular basis problems well? its too much soemtimes. we all just want to be happy.

I think personally the reason people become annoyed with "attention whoring" is that the person is relying solely on the coddling of other people instead of dealing with the problem at hand, or at least in classic attention whoring cases. Personally, I say people can do whatever they want, but if you open the floodgates to a public forum you have to be prepared for ridicule. It's like sharing your writing: you have to be prepared to get multiple opinions if you put it on a public forum, and not all of these opinions will be good or kind.

People naturally love shooting who's already down.
That's an actual psychological tendency we touched on in class a few days ago... bringing others further down, which is much easier when they're already there, is generally done by most to make themselves look better.

People are extremely fast to judge on the internet - in real life too.
Nothing wrong with being an "attention whore" except for the fact that other's may become annoyed with you. Everyone needs some attention, but attention whores basically prance around with a sign that says "NOTICE ME!"

and most of the time, i think people dont like attention seekers because they think they are just whining about their own issues and that others have it a lot worse? o: I'm not sure..

The only problem I see is if someone is begging for attention and desperately posting their whole entire life story for attention, I get it- its your own social media account however sometimes it's just not necessary.

Yeah but it can get annoying sometimes. Like think about a TV show with the most popular mean girl. Everyone is annoyed of her because she wants "attention" all the time.
It's best to just seek attention from people who actually care about you; like your friends and family.
Heck you can be the attention whore of your home and they'll accept you! :)

I don't think there's a problem with being one. Some people are annoyed that some people love attention and degrade them because they feel that those people will do ANYTHING to get attention.

It's OK to seek attention. And we all do it. It becomes into a 'attention grabbing' thing when its about stuff that is easily taken care of or things that are the obvious, for the most part.
