Are you certain or might you change your mind?

I'm a (not newly) single after a 2 and a half year relationship.
I have started dating again.

I am finding a lot of men want children.
I feel as though there is littel people around for a relationship wit my life choice.
It's not like I'm saying I will only date men who are 6ft etc

I am 30 and don't want children. I may change my mind. But no point lying or leading someone on.
I used to always think I would have them and I also wanted them. But I have changed my mind.

For me children is Definitely a NO and it is mainly because of existential reasons but how I view the current state of the world is a big factor as well as this world and reality altogether. I think things will eventually get so bad that it becomes a point of no return.

I find that many things are very unstable now, such as big economic problems from large amounts of unemployment, always the possibility of being laid off, or being replaced by oversea workers that are outsourced, or even replaced by automation. And all the shit tons of bad things that comes with life that will eventually affect you the moment you are brought into existence and consciousness here. All the bad things are absolutely Guaranteed and stacked completely against you once you arrive here in this reality. What I meant is all the illnesses, pain, hardships, etc. and in the end, it's always the same result: you Die,

And everyone dies regardless of whom they are, whom they aren't, what they do, or what they don't do, and regardless of pretty much everything and anything else.

And even all the stuff that we had ever accumulated and owned in our lifetimes will no longer be in our possession when we are gone from this world.

In other words, I feel by my own conscience that I would spare and save someone all the trouble and misery they would have to face here in this reality "eventually" once they become part of this reality by making the choice of not having or wanting any children of my own.

I'm somewhere in my 30s, the age displayed here isn't even remotely close to my current age.

I agree with you about the way the world in going. The waymost of us is unsustainable let alone our environmental impact and people fighting over oil and religion etc.

Another reason for me to change my mind is actually, I cannot think of any reason why I want them.
I used to have the idea that if you looked after them and were a nice parent they would look after you when you are old. 1. that is a massively selfish attitude 2. that might not be the case, they could not look after you!

I think children are great, but I just don't fancy my own.

I like to go out drinking at the drop of a hat if I feel like it, traveling and getaways at a last minute when I feel like it. I have so much of the world I want to see.

And yes with what you are saying about odds stacked against. How do I know no matter how good I am that life I chose to create actually wants to be in existance.

I think the reasoning of I want a family. Or I want to give my life more meaning. Or I think it's just natural. To me, are selfish, a whole lot I, me, I want. Rather than thinking about the actual possible life te child might have.

Other people are making up for us not having them anyway. You think I'm being selfish?

I would rather everyone worked to together somehow to fix all these miserable problems and make it sustainable first before just bringing in another generation to try and pick up the mess the current and prior generations had left behind for us to suffer through. And I know we are all suffering through it now, and possibly will suffer more in the future if it unfolds horribly as I would imagine and expect it to.

Of course that is unrealistic and unlikely to happen because all of humanity will never be united and learn to tolerate each other enough and come to some kind of a truce, and put aside their differences to actually really cooperate and fix the biggest problems in the world. There will always be selfish and personal gain motives that humans will have and develop and that is what gets in the way of resolving all those problems in the world and got us to where we are now.

I think it's "more selfish" to not really think thoroughly of every important aspect in this world and reality and just jump on the bandwagon of "ok let's have kids, just because everyone else is having them, or because that's what's expected of me by society, family, friends or whomever because they all fucking claim that it is the right thing to do, etc."

Sometimes it makes me wondered if "Death" and the "possibility of Dying" was ever "fixed" somehow by whatever means and if death became no longer possible anymore, then would having children, family, etc. would even matter anymore?

Would that then change society's expectations of that the current generation is obligated to continue this cycle of passing on a "next generation" of people just because no generation will last forever and will eventually cease to exist?

Are society worried that eventually a significantly large number of us would give up and choose childfree and influence others as well?

I am not totally closed about that, but it's much more likely that I would want children then I would not, it's not something that I am too much in a harry for, but as people gets older, their is much less time to waste, and I am fully aware of the biological clock, even as an man. I see an relationship without children as far less serious, and there is no much point in marriage for people that don't want children.

Usually woman are wanting children far more then man do, because maternal instinct, and because because infertile at an relatively young age, but if you date an much older man you would not be surprised that they want children much sooner then you.

Traditionally one of the main reasons for marriage was to ensure that the children would not be rised without an father with an single mother and being known as an bastards. As for why an relationship without an children is far less serious, having an common children is an greater bond then just having sex, for better or for worse, and having an children is an very serious thing, and children are the future, as well as be biggest thing for the long run that can come out of an relationship between man an woman, for better or for worse, when I say for worse, it's mainly in the case of breaking up. Choosing the right partner for children is also more important then choosing the right partner only for sex, because in the end children are more important.

I choose a partner for more than sex. So what about people who marry who then find out they cannot have children? Is that a waste of a marriage? Children are the future of the human race, not the future. And anyway, judging by the ammount of people saying they want 2 3 or 5 themselves they are doing that work for the people that don't. Children are the future of the human race, but at the level of current expansion it is not sustainable :)

The same thing that goes for sex are goes for feeling as well, you sow how relatively easy it was for you to live your ex boyfriend after an after a two and a half years of relationship and start dating again, do you think that if you had an common children with him it would had been that easy? children are not only the future of the state, children are also the future of the family, the parents don't have an eternal like, and in the end the children is all that is laft from their relationship, that is how nature works.

Can't you see how much less an value an relationship without children has? children are one of the main reasons that people are looking for relationship in the first place, and actually it's the most important reason of all, for the long run, and an really serious relationship is all about the long run, and not the short lived enjoyment. Many people are not going to marry an infertile person in the first place, and yes it's an very bad choice to marry someone like that, in most of the cases, almost as bad as marrying an asexual.

It was not easy to leave my partner. He was cheating on me. I had nightmares for weeks every night. I am lucky because he treated me very badley and I made the mistake to stay through abuse. No it would not have been easy to move on from him with children, becuase I would be forced to communicate with him. Yes children are the future of the human race, we are not exactly close to extintion. Imagine if every single uman had one child each in their life. Like I say, people popping out 5. Doesn't matter if I don't. And the world will cope just fine without any humans.

Yes humans would survive even without you having an children, because there are so many humans in the 21 century, but what about your family and your future partner, would they too have an continuity? or would their legacy would end thanks to you? It's safe to assume that you would not have any legacy, and you would feel sorry in the end that you did not had an children when you could, but you would be alone, with no husband and no children. I never said that you sould not allow to not having children, maybe it's for the best, but mainly because you would be an bad parent. Yes there would be more space left for other children, at yours and your close ones expense. People tell me that I am young and I will change my mind. I have felt this way since I was six, however, and the idea of having children makes me so extremely depressed, you have no idea.

@MissHope That's a bit harsh! People who don't have children don't automatically live alone and die alone! Some peoples children have nothing to do with them even if their parents are amazing. For all you know you could have a big family and still die lonely. Your kids could move away, and raise their children elsewhere and you never see them. I think it's important to realise you will have to nuture outside relaitonships throughot your life ad when you get old and not only rely on family. I work with old people everyday. There are some with no children who have huge social and support networks and are happy. Some have a few children who never see them, help or call etc! And people who do choose to seek solice, who are you to say they are not happy with that? Some people really just don't like other people haha

I am 36, and I would like children. I understand the problem you are having, as I am on the other side of it. All I am finding are women that don't want children. The ones that did want children all had children when they were much younger, and feel their little family is complete. I have no idea where the stereotype of the desperate woman looking to get pregnant before it is too late comes from. The only baby crazy females I ever notice are teenagers, or in their early twenties which is too young for me.

You're 30 there are health concerns that increase with age so if you want to do it ( and it sounds like you don't ) you might want to get on that. Do you have much experience with somewhat older guys? That's one demographic of men I know that typically doesn't want kids. I think the younger the guy is the more likely that it is that he wants kids. ( Obvious exceptions of course.

I have dated a guy who is 5 years older tha me and i think he does want one. Another I met online and we were talking on the phone, got on so well and wanted to meet. But he said he absolutely wanted children and would regret it on his death bed! He also was convinced I would change my mind. So I won't meet him. Yeah I could change my mind. I didn't know I would change my mind to a no! So if I do I have 5 years to make it happen! Past35 for me personally is too late. It gets the most risky past 40, but 35should be the marker! To be honest Imsingle so either way it's so not on the cards haha

I would say generally there is more awareness for sustainability and the environment etc now. A little more being done after many many yearsof industrial revolution. But absolutely, I agree it is better to be more sure that in 50 years time they won't be starving or fighting to live. I always said, if I had children, I would teach them survival skills, how to find wild food, see if they wanted to go to bushcraft lessons, and get one of my best friends to teach them how to snare and shoot then gut and prepare animals (I am sorry if you are vegan or vegetarian!!)

I'm 22. I don't want children. I'm absolutely certain that I won't change my mind. It may be difficult to find a guy who shares your views on children, but luckily, more and more people are choosing not to have children.

It is very difficult I'm sure. I don't think people realise that. Someone I knw recently had a child and said she had no idea it would be that, that hard. But loves her child so much of course. But was just wrapped up in all the wonderfull rather than reality. She is happy though. That is the main thing. You would most likely make a fantastic mother, but it's not for everyone. Never let people shame you or tell you what should be if you don't change your mind!

exactly, i think some people just aren't cut out for it and thats totally fine but my aunt was adamant she didn't want kids but when it actually came to having kids she totally loved it so you can never really know

Yeah it's hard to say, I changed my mind from yes to no. Whos to say in 2 years I won't change again? No some people arn't. But you might surprise yourself like your Aunt did.

Kids are sweet and cute but worrisome and do not mind adults. I just don't think I'd enjoy being a dad.

I'm 23 and I want children. Not essential but I'd be happy if I have some in future.
I want children only if,
1) I've stable source of income and settled well in life (area, job and other factors) + I find someone I love.
2) If I've stable income and settled well + I remain single then I'll look for adoption.
Here in #1 I'm certain that I want kids but not certain in #2 because of various factors.
