Black women only good for twerking, singing and sex?

My friends and I were discussing the new Beyonce video Lemonade which honors black women and in a lot of ways tells our story of adversity and how we triumph through it. We were all gathered around just being typical girls having fun, gossiping, and in general talking about what part we liked best about the video and then a guy who goes to our university overheard us talking about how proud we were as black women to be making so many strides not only in pop culture, but in education as well. I suppose when he heard this he got upset and went off. He went on a tirade about how no one gives a damn about black women and that we're hands down the worst group of women. Of course I completely disagree as did all my friends, who at this time were ready to go off on him. Coming from a black man, that's quite hurtful. He then continued that black women "ain't worth shit but singing, fucking, and bouncing ass" and that was what the world only cared about when it came to us. We were just entertainment. At this time most me and my friend were ready to fight and yelling at him, but the angrier we got the more he stereotyped us and said how white, Latina, Asian women were better. Eventually we stopped even bothering to argue with his idiocy and left him alone. It was obvious he was a lost brother who needed guidance. 

But his words did hurt, because it is based in some truth. Much of the world does not value black women, and blackness in general. 

However, despite black women making such great strides in education. 60% are college educated, many black women are opening businesses, and supporting their families. However even now the much of the world see's us as welfare queens, or simply hoodrats who have no life goals when that's far from the truth. 

My question is, is this the media's fault or have people always held this belief since slavery and it passed down or is the media instilling in people what they think black women should mean to the world?

Wow, he has a lot os self hate within him. A major problembisbthe media conrinuing to potray stereotypes andbgiving platforms for people to spread prejudice. The racial inferiority pseudoscience that was used to validate the enslaving of Africans has unfortunately remained within the collective thinking of this country.

We are all labels now, not people. Because we are all associated with the negative stereotypes of the race we are classified as we begin to despise not only the racial group but also ourselves. Then the media force feeds these stereotypes down our throats and we are all expected to act, dress, and think a certain way.

There are role models out there; there just aren't that many. In time, people's misperceptions of blacks and black women in particular will disappear. It is just taking so fucking loooong... but Dr. King's dream will happen.

the media didn't ship us in boats over to america to work for free. society has done a great job at brainwashing the vast majority to be racist to us, and unfortunately that guy drank the koolaid himself. even though he is black he probably just wants to be on the "winning team". regardless of the fact that if his black ass were ever to end up like mike brown or trayvon martin, very few of those nonblack women he praises would protest, speak out for him, or even care.

just because the world thinks it dont make it true. for centuries they thought the earth was flat.

There will always be haters. I really think instead of focusing on the bad seeds, why not focus on the good? Plenty of people do not see black people as any of what that guy said. Any decent person with a brain and non racist mindset will disagree with him. I really don't see how the media is portraying any of that. There's a lot of black pride things going on. There will be negative people, regardless of gender. That will NEVER change. There will always be disrespectful people towards any race.

I think its more statistical frequency and not really meant for anything. after all, Miley sings, twerks and is a freak.  I don't even pay attention. I do want to see what others think though.
