I always wondered this, because it's really beautiful and I want to learn from you guys. =)

The Ayurvedic significance of wearing Nose Ring
In India the left side of the nose is generally regarded as the ideal position for nose rings. According to the Ayurvedic belief the spot made by piercing of nose is associated with the female reproductive organs. It is generally believed that woman who have there nose pierced on the left side, experience less pain while delivering the child and they also have less menstrual pain. It is a common belief that wearing nose rings make the process of child birth easier.

It is connected with virginity. A girl with nose piercing is considered as unwed and virgin. It is centuries old symbol which later became gradually fashion and popular in both virgins and married.
In Sub-continent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh) in the Oldest Profession (prostitution) a novice and newly entrant fetches price more than normal provided she is virgin and as a symbol of virginity she has nose piercing.
Since majority of people don't know background therefore they take it as "tradition". A tradition always has background.

"What is the significance of a nose piercing in Indian culture?"
It's a tradition. Nowadays, not many girls follow this here. Every tradition has some sort of significance. It is done because it decreases mensurational and child birth pain. Nose is associated with sex and that's why, piercing helps there.
"And when is it worn?"
Depends. Back in old days, women used to wear this all the time. But nowadays, it's worn during marriage ceremony only and that's not even necessary.
Oh sorry, it's not associated with sex, it is associated with reproductive system.
Thanks :)
Not an expert on Hinduism but it's basically traditional. It's not like a recent fashion trend for young girls, but a long-rooted tradition. I've heard that it can signify marriage but also seen lots of Indian girls who were single who had nose piercings (though generally not as elaborate as the one shown in the picture).
@Gommers Maybe not exactly -- did I miss a reason? I asked my Indian friends about that before and they said it was basically tradition, while also finding it doesn't always mean the girl is married (somewhat like the bindi which usually indicates marriage but not always). I don't know a detailed answer.

I believe they were originally intended to discourage habitual nose-pickers!
But only one nostril? Haha
Indian here... The nose ring has no religious significance.
Different parts of India have different kind of nose rings. North and West have nose rings more commonly than east or south. The actress here is playing the role of a north-west Indian.
Girls generally only wear it during festivals/weddings.. not in day to day life.
