There's confidence in various areas. If you are shy and nervous around people, that's not very confident in the social realm.

You could be quiet/antisocial and confident, but in that case you wouldn't be nervous around people at all, and I don't think that constitutes as "shy" exactly.

Confidence is typically characterized, at least as far as others perceive it, by a lack of fears/doubts/nervousness. A confident person is completely comfortable doing something. They're not afraid of being rejected or failing in any way.

If a person is like this in the social realm, they wouldn't be perceived as shy. I don't see how on earth someone could be perceived as shy and socially confident at the same time, unless you were just inwardly afraid/nervous of talking to people but were able to hide it so well that no one even noticed.

I tend to characterize confidence as fearlessness. At least that's what leads to the perception of it among observers.

      i.dailymail.co.uk/.../...500000578-533_964x807.jpg

... it's very unlikely that this tight-roper above is full of fears and doubts. He appears confidence since he seems to lack them. Of course there is some small chance that he's shitting his pants and scared to death, but it seems unlikely. None of that fear/nervousness/doubt is visible.

A lot of people define confidence in terms of believing in yourself, but I think, at least as far as perception goes, it's fearlessness that leads to someone who looks confident. The guy above may or may not believe in himself. He might just not fear death at all. Either way he comes across as confident no matter how high or low he thinks of himself because we don't see his actions inhibited by fear and doubt.

Shyness is lack of confidence. If you are feeling shy, that's a feeling of insecurity. You can't really feel insecure and confident at the same time. You can feel shy or confident in different situations, but you can't have more than one situation at a time anyway.

Shyness with certain situations does not necessarily reflect an overall lack of confidence. Particularly people who are shy with the opposite sex, Have you ever heard of Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, Bill Gates, Gayle Sears, or Teddy Roosevelt? Did they seem to lack confidence? Many shy people are out there performing every day in a very judgmental world where the self promoting loudmouth gets all the attention. This takes courage and yes, confidence. Too bad stereotypes and myth pass for fact in our society.

@lucius46ad True, but we interpreted the question differently. I wasn't talking about overall confidence. But can you be shy and confident at the very same moment.

It is possible to be shy and confident. You can be shy for other reasons than lacking confidence. Some people just don't like others in their business. They can be confident about themselves though, they just don't like to show it off. They can be confident in their grades or writing abilities or something, they just might not want the world to know.

yes, totally!! It always depends on the circumstances. If you are in an uncomfortable area without people you connect with it is easy to be shy, because it is similar to build a little wall around yourself. In other situations you feel at ease and you can easily let those walls down and be "free".

Yes, I'm these things, I'm confident when I'm fighting the cause or acknowledging someone else, I'm shy when I'm backing myself or being acknowledged Or recognised for achieving something personally. I'm brace on behalf of others. I don't it's hard to explain.

You can't be very confident when you're shy. I'm shy and I'll feel confident in the sense that "I feel pretty today", but not confident enough to talk to people voluntarily.

It is possible to be an introvert and confident. However, that's not the same as shyness so I dunno

Yes you can be both. Shyness does not always mean you do not believe in yourself. It can also mean you are an introvert.

Yes because I am extremely shy and quiet in general, but ironically I'm extremely confident when I go to perform on ice (figure skating) in front of hundreds of people haha

unfortunately, many women mistake bravado for confidence. The blowhard does very well with the girls in our society.
