Why do people ask me if I'm married so often?

I was married for 15 years and have widowed for 11. Never wanted to remarry.

Probably either just a typical conversation type question, or they are checking your single/taken status. Normally a ring will do the trick. It takes half a second to check. But that's not as reliable as it used to be. When I was younger and more interested in dating, I'd notice if she was wearing a ring within seconds.

Perhaps during the conversation, an unknown sexual tension built up so when you mentioned your day or what you were doing, they started to wonder whether you were avaliable or not. Then they reflexively asked if you were married or not and forgot themselves..

Unfortunately, society has sort of assumed that anyone over a certain age (seems like early 30's) must be married - or whatever would they be doing with their lives? *heavy sarcasm*
Nothing against you at all if someone asks and you're not, you do you and be proud of it.

It's romantic but it's also practical. I have been alone for awhile now and enjoy the simple way of living that comes with being alone. Once there is no one to consider but yourself it's easy to grow accustomed to.

We live in a society that haven't been mentored to embrace what it means to be emotionally connected but instead mentored with a locker room/porn like mentality,, you are not only being practical, but also wise.

Its a common question. If I'm at a party and meet someone its usually the second question I ask after what they do for a living. My job and my wife are part of my identity.

That's a good point! I usually ask what someone does for a living, do they have kids or grandkids and those same types of questions. Some people have life partners who become common-law spouses as well here.
